    300tdi Fan - missing blade!

I just noticed that our 300Tdi D1 is missing a blade from the cooling fan. There is no evidence of the blade doing damage, so it obviously happened a while ago (before we bought the car).

There was a whine/squeal from the serpentine belt, but no noticeable vibration...

Given the above - would you be happy to keep using the vehicle with the fan as-is - at least temporarily?

Ben, get a fan asap but in the meanwhile yes I have seen many that have had blades broken off for some time, customers having heard nothing amiss. Just goes to show how important regular owner or workshop maintenance is! I'm certain some would've just kept going regardless had no-one noticed

I had a fan blade missing a blade once.

Apparently someone had a socket and bar on the crank bolt turning the engine over (I think to adjust rockers) then forgot to remove it before actually cranking the engine for real

Thankfully 300Tdi fan blades aren't overly exxy.

    Hi Rick / Isusurover,
Same deal, I forgot the spanner on the end of the crank, I was working on the engine over a few days, just forgot......... I was lucky and only found out that the crankshaft nut was a lot looser than it should have been. I had a broken blade on my Rangie and I suspect this could have contributed to the early demise of the water pump, that was when I found the blade missing.
When I took the fan of I found two other blades also cracked where the blades join the hub, if one breaks off due to "natural causes" you'll be sure another one or two won't be far behind, might not be so lucky next time. You might consider fitting a couple of thermo fans from an older Ford, quite easy to fit and the engine runs a lot quieter, it needs power to create noise, power is better at the wheels. Just an idea.

I borrowed an old Ford econo van from a relative a few yrs ago & he had mentioned there was a bit of burning smell, but not to worry about it.I found one of the plastic fan blades had come off & melted itself onto the exhaust manifold.
It went for yrs without the blade,he never got it fixed.

If it was mine,i wouldn't have left it like that as it would be out of balance & will eventually cause more problems. In fact with axial fans we have at work, once one blade breaks,it usually hits the others & you end up with all the blades broken.
