Installing a D2 rear view mirror in D1

The rear view mirror in my D1 is now so loose that it pretty much just flaps around rather than giving me a view of what's behind me. Where the ball enters the mirror at the back is all broken.

So I need to get a new one. I've spotted a brand new D2 auto dim one with compass going for $50+ (not at that link though!), or the plain jane D1 version from one of our site sponsors for $45+.

Anyone tried installing one into a D1 before? I've had a hunt around, and found on another forum that someone had managed it, but couldn't find it here

The compass needs the harness to power it etc, I looked into (for S&G when I had to replace with windscreen. Too much stuffing.

I've got a harness stuffed up under the courtesy light. From what I read, the hard part was converting the 3 cable connector to a 2 cable one. I'm going to give it a whirl. Comes to the worst, I'll stick it on eBay if I can't get it to fit!
