    Disco 1 V8 for towing a caravan

    Hi All
I am a newby to this forum. I am interested in buying a disco 1 v8 to use for caravanning and 4wd.

I have done a trip last xmas east to west back east, 12000km all up in a Mazda CX9, which towed well and has heaps of power for the trip. The only problem is we missed the best places because we had no 4wd. I think the disco will make a good touring/ off road vehicle and spare car.

Does anybody have experience towing a caravan with the disco 1 and can you give me your thoughts about its suitbalilty?

I think that it is a good value vehicle given its current market value.

    Thanks
    Cheers Mick

    Hi Mick,

I have used a 3.9V8 Disco to tow a 16 foot caravan on long trips. Very pleasant tourer but a bit slow on hills. Into a headwind sometimes had to stay in 3rd gear to hold 100 kph but towed well.

Caravan was quite heavily loaded - more than would usually be the case if touring.

Don't expect great economy - around 25-28 L/100km which limits range between refills and it was not affected much by how it was driven. Got used to never passing up an opportunity to fill up.

Also have a TD5 - chipped - better performance at open road limits and 17 L/100 km.

    Cheers

We just got back today from our last camping run, this was the 1st time with the 5spd V8 disco S1 on gas, after selling my 84 RR 3.5 with C4 auto the difference is UNREAL the disco pulled beautifully, most of the time in 4th gear or down hill or very flat top gear, 100 kph,
I dont like loading an over drive box, the van is a 17' windsor with all the gear and the disco had fire wood for 4days 4.4kva genny, fuel, water, gear on the roof rack, annex etc, it has 2.5 lift and wallowed a little but no big deal, loved it ..if yours is on gas advance the timing to 10deg BTC "thanks Bee-utey" for the tip...Gary

If its an Auto then consider a transmission cooler upgrade as they have a tendency to overheat when towing which can end up cooking the transmission. Many D1 owners have fitted bigger coolers from P38 Range Rovers (me included). Lots of threads on this issue.
