    1993 TDi Clutch Issues

Ok, some thoughts and ideas from the floor would be helpful.

My clutch is leaking, somewhere. Ok, so does the transfer and power steering, but the clutch is more of a problem, because when air gets into the system, well changing gears gets really difficult!!!

I think it is the slave cylinder leaking into the bell housing as I can't see any obvious external leaks.

Any thoughts on what it could be, and if it's a repair or replace job? or other ways to test to find the problem?

    Hi

Is your clutch fluid actually dropping in level?

If so I would have a look under the dash of your car at the back of the clutch master cyl and make sure that fluid is not leaking from the rear seal and down the firewall (check firewall on the engine bay side also)

If this checks ok I would then go to the slave cylinder and remove it from the bell housing to inspect for leakage. Once removed pull back the rubber boot and it it is full of fluid it will need replacing.

Chances are that the leak will be fairly obvious if you have no clutch.

If you cannot find a leak and the fluid is not dropping I would consider the small round damper as suspect in the pipeline between the master and slave cylinder. I replaced one of these on my 1994 Disco because of a soggy clutch pedal and there were no obvious leaks from memory.

Oh and there is also the posibility of a worn clutch assembly??

Good luck and hope this helps

    Dave

Yes, the reservoir keeps emptying so definitely a leak.

Nothing on the inside of the firewall, I don't think anything on the outside, although it is hard to tell because I spilled a pile of fluid there the first time I tried to fill it

Yes, worn clutch could be an issue for age, but investigating the leak first.

Looks like taking the slave out could be the next step to inspect.

Put a catch tray underneath when you remove the slave cylinder.....
When my clutch pedal dropped to the floor years ago I suspected the slave cylinder was at fault and just unbolted it and covered the garage floor in brake fluid.
I put a seal kit in and was back on the road straight away plus I got a new slave cylinder from the LR dealer (car was still under 3 month warranty). Soon after there was a wet patch in the drivers footwell and the master cylinder failed.....

I put a seal kit through the master but noticed that whenever I flushed the clutch fluid it was black. Turns out this is wear in the master cylinder as the steel piston wears away the aluminium body.

Last year fitted the new LR slave cylinder (supplied under warranty) and a master cylinder that had been sleeved in stainless steel. I'm thinking about getting the original slave & master re-sleeved ready for next time....

have you got the wading plug in the bell housing,if its leaking into the bell housing it will be leaking from the plug hole, also if you remove the slave cylynder be very carefull the push rod stays with the bell housing or it will be a major repair as the rod is held in by a clip.
