    Transmission cooler hoses and service

    Hi All,

Today i noticed a small pool of red oil under the front of the newly aquired D1 . Looks like its coming right from the front of the vehicle around the radiotor and , beacuse of it reddish colour, I assume it is either auto trans or power steer fluid.

I checked the auto trans level and it looks a bit low and seems to be quite dark in comparison to what ive seen on other transmissons.

Ive used the search function and found the syptoms are usually caused by leaking transmisison cooler hoses.

    So here go the questions:
    1. Does this sound like the trans cooler hose leak?
    2. Where can I get a set of replacement hoses in Sydney (and what are peoples experience with Enzed/Pirtek making replacements)?
    3. Should I service the autotrans given its run low and the dark colour?
    4. If so, what do people recommend for autotrans services? Full, just oils, oils & fileters etc.

Thanks in adviance. I'ts my first Disco (none of my mates have them) and am travelling blind.

    Cheers,

I had the same issue, and a week ago sorted it out.
Red usually means Auto Trans Fluid.
The auto hoses normally leak around the alloy fitting.
    Easy fix, but finiky.
Remove lines and take to Enzed. It cost me $128.00 for both lines repaired.
    Happy with the job.
Suggest an ebay purchase of the $40.00 auto service kit.
Land Rover & Range Rover Auto Transmission Service Kit | eBay
I received it in 4 days from Tassie.
Dropped pan, and replaced filter, o-ring and gasket.
Gave the auto trans cooler a good clean out. (was black).
Certainly made a difference, and happy with the result.
Not rocket science for this service, but you will curse a little getting the pan off and on.
    Cheers Dave

I ended up importing some new cooler lines from the UK as part of a much larger order, but if you have little else to but, the shipping will make it more expensive than going to somewhere like Pirtek.

    You will!
There's a chassis crossmember that crosses under the front of the oil pan - 8 bolts and it's off, and will make access a lot easier.

Don't forget that the D1 also uses ATF oil for the power steering. And that tends to "mark it's terrotory". Just make sure it's the autobox before you start pulling the hoses.

Took your advice and checked the Power Steering fluid level before anything else. It was almost empty, so I can assume thats the culprit.
Just to be sure Ive gone over the entire front end with degreaser. I'll check to see where the oil leak is over the next few days.

Are there any places the Power Steer on these typically leak from?

Easier to say where don't they leak from!

    • Hose where it connects to reservoir
    • Steering box seals
    • Pump to steering box hoses

To get mine to stop leaking, I ended up replacing the whole lot, including re-sealing the steering box.

All my own work! I learned a good lesson in how heavy a steering box can be too. The answer is @#*@!?$ heavy!

And I should say that I've not lost a drop of oil since I did all that too.

Not a drop under mine today after tightening a few hose clamps. I'll continue to watch it over the next few days though. Thanks to everyone who responded. It's a great forum here.

After a week of diving and being pretty chuffed that I hadnt found a drop of fluid on the driveway, I decided to get underneah and make sure all was good. What a mistake!

No sooner had I gotten under there and DRIP! ATF fliud all over the underneath and hoses. On closer inspection it looks like its leaking around the pressed fittings wherr it goes from high pressure hose to the metal pipe (that rund under the radiator).

So my question is, do I just ditch the metal pipe and run new hoses the enture length or shoud I keep the metal pipe and just replace the hose sections already there? I fure less joins/fitting less chance of leaking in future.
