Need Discovery 1 Advice Before Purchase!

    Hi members,

I have recently arrived in Perth and have 5k to spend on a 4x4 that will get my fiancee and I around Australia. After looking at a lot of candidates, I have laid down a small deposit on a 1993 Land Rover Discovery. It's only done 185,000 odd miles and is in fantastic condition (bar the air conditioning which hopefully just need regassing, a few scratches and a disconnected immobilizer and key).

I have haggled the price down to $5k and would like to know firstly, if any of you think if this is a bit steep. In Sydney there seems to be cheaper options or newer models, but there seems to be lack of 4x4's in Perth (apart from a few Jeeps and Explorers which I have doubts about). The link to the 4x4 on Gumtree is Find Cheap Used & Second Hand Cars For Sale | Mount Richon | Gumtree Classifieds.

Any thoughts on whether it would be best for me to skip it or go for it would be appreciated. On another note, after test driving it today I wasn't happy with the sway or body roll at all - does anyone know of a place in Perth that can sort out the suspension or offer an anti sway kit to prevent this?

    Any advice highly appreciated!

    Antony.

Hi Discotrip the disco looks in good condition from the photo's but the price seems a bit steep for that model. Just a thought if you are going to travel around this wonderful island then a diesel would be a better option ( not many ks in a v8 petrol tank ) I have a duel fuel v8 and found servos with gas limited when wanting to go further inland (lots of pre trip planing required) I love my v8 but if I was planing to travel oz it would have to be a diesel. Hope this helps and good luck with your travels

I think thats a bit steep for a 93, even though it appears to be in pretty good nick.

That is an early pre update model (albiet looks in good nick) - you can buy good updates for less than that.

I would be tempted to keep looking.

I would have a look at that one below

Find Cheap Used & Second Hand Cars For Sale | Wangara | Gumtree Classifieds

and haggle if its what u want and is ok. Its a later model is a deisel even though its coverd more k's and provided it has some service records I would be looking at it even though its at a dealer. The 300tdi is a fantastic motor and will do very high kilometers before needing a rebuild.

    Hi Anthony,
Just a bit rich, I picked up a 300Tdi auto soft dash with ABS, 2 inch lift, 2 inch body lift, some whizz band dvd player and a bull bar with some really big spotties on it with 180k on it for the same price ish you are looking at, maroon isn't the best colour for paint fade, same as Green, I've just had the bonnet and roof repainted.
Found mine advertised on the side of the road, too good to pass by. Something will turn up when you least expect it.

    Thanks

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for all of your responses and links. This has certainly helped to see the bigger picture. I will continue to look for diesel options and see if I can spot a deal. Only issue is we have a couple of days to find one before the rental goes; odds are we'll see a couple of great 4x4's on the side of the road on the way out of town!

    Thanks,
    Antony.

FWIW I just bought a 97 model V8 with under 200,000kms for $4k, in mint condition and everything works perfectly.

I hope you found something in time.

Antony I'd be jumping on the diesel-gas one that Brad suggested.
    Few more here;

This one is lovely and set up to travel Find Cheap Used & Second Hand Cars For Sale | Woodvale | Gumtree Classifieds I bought one a few weeks before this came on the market and I wish I'd been more patient.

The extra you spend in purchase price on a TDi you'll save in fuel on your trip. Whichever you go with see if you can enlist someone off here who knows them well to have a look over it or take it to a Landy mechanic for a pre purchase check.

Hey Micko Thats my sons tdi in woodvale its a really really good one and I am thinking him selling it is a mistake but its his to sell. We looked everywhere for one before we bought this. Its also got a lot of fruit on it and has been treated really well with no rust whatsoever anywhere..
