I bought a set of h4 "100%" more light for my d1 and they are awesome. cost 4o bucks, are completely legal and don't blind other drivers. When i need more light i flick the spotties on.
1994 D110 Tdi - 1957 88" Series 1 - New Project (due to commence 2056)
hi, I have noticed there is a bit of discussion here as to the safety of HIDs, having run both a cheap HID upgrade and now NARVA off road h4s in my Disco 1 there is another aspect of road safety besides brightness that may not have been thought of...
wildlife
In my travels in the Alice regions I have noticed that the roos have often ran away from the vehicle from a distance but as I get closer they come back in the front of the vehicle for a look at the yellow lights, however with white coloured lights they do one of 2 things
one stand where they are and not move allowing you to take appropriate measures to avoid damaging your vehicle
two (more often than not) run away and stay away
this may just be central roos and may need to be looked into a tad more scientifically but I know that since I've removed most of my yellow coloured lights my amount of near misses have gone down considerably
Having worked in Alice for a well know coach tour company for a few years going from Alice to the Rock and back. I noticed the same thing certain headlights attract the roos other scare them away.
With the standard yellow looking headlights we use to be a target for roo strikes every 2nd nite. With the brighter white lights very rarely did we hit one.
My experience was that my 1993 Disco headlights were looking a bit dull and you could see that the reflector surface was not as shiny as original, hence loss of reflected light.
After my lightforce spotties got nicked I couldnt be bothered fitting another set so I got a set of replacement Disco 1 non-genuine head-light assemblies from an online supplier in Tasmania and also installed the plus 50% H4 lamps.
The result is very impressive. More like a modern car. I recommend that as a first step.
I put a set of D2a Headlights in my D1 recently (same as the D1's but with the outline blackened) and fitted a PNP 55Watt H4 Hi/Lo KIt to it, some adjustment was needed to get the glare down to an acceptable level, and the RHS light has a crazy hot spot in it that the LHS doesnt, im putting this down to cheap Ebay HID'zzz. Eventually id love to perform a HID Project retrofit by splitting the glass lens off, mounting a projector inside and moulding a new "glass" front from plexi. of course, this, like all m projects will be many many moons away, but in the interim, the HIDz are a drastic improvement in light, teamed up with lightforce HID's its a pleasure to drive at night!
