    Nervous Tacho needle 300TDI

My Tacho needle started jumping around 500 revs either side of actual revs and sometimes dropping right off, while i was driving the other day.... Any Ideas??? ( loose wire or does the 300tdi have a crank angle sensor?)

The tacho on the 300Tdi gets its reading from the (?K) terminal on the back of the alternator. If its loose or a bit crusty, the symptoms you describe are spot on how it acts.

give the terminal and wire connection a good clean and make sure its nice and secure. Pretty likely that's all it'll need!

Be warned, it is often a sign of pending alternator failure..

I had a similar problem when I had my 300Tdi Disco. I solved it be removing the tacho and re-soldering all of the joins on the back of it. It never played up again.

    Hijack

Sorry for the hijack but I noticed my speedo doing this a couple of weeks back. Sitting on 105-110 it'd suddenly drop back to 70ish then spring straight back to where it should be.
    Any clues???

Same problem, different wire.... Crawl under your car to the t-case, there is a wire where the speedo gets its signal. This is probably loose/about to fall off. If it is very loose grab some pliers, give the spade a slight twist, this will make the connection a lot tighter.

At least that was the problem when my tacho and speedo began to dance on different occasions

I agree that it can be the sign of a failing alternator (personal experience) but can also confirm the poor connection in the instrument binnacle. My Tacho needle regularly fluctuates or fails. I fix by flicking the centre bottom of the tacho with my finger (never fails)...when it does completely fail I will resolder. Same same for the speedo although mine was more the sensor connection (which I don't flick on the move :-))
