    A leaking exhaust system

Check for holes, loose flanges or manifolds

    THanks.

Where exactly in the cabin would these fumes be entering through?

Should these manifold bolts be torqued?

if so, what value (Nm) is this torque?

You will probably find that the fumes are coming in through the back door seal, try winding all the windows up and put the fan on and see if you get fumes, if not, more than likely the rear door seal. There are also air vents inside the rear plastic side panels, they are supposed to have Gaffa tape over them, but over the years the tape falls off and allows fumes/dust in, Regards Frank.

    Thanks Tank.

I just checked all exhaust manifold bolts, some were loose

    Anyway, all tightened again.

Is it hard to remove these rear plastic side panels that contain the air vents inside?

No mate, they have them plastic plugs with the flat heads, you need to get something flat behind the head and either side of the plug, I use my electric crimp plies, they seem to do the job. Take your car for a drive along a dusty dirt road with your front windows open and then if the back seal is leaking you will see the dust marks left behind around the rear door seal, Regards Frank.

    THanks Frank.

I spent most of today fixing up a few things:

    - Tightened exhaust manifold bolts
    - Lay underneath vehicle whilst in idle and checked for exhaust leaks (very small 1mm hole in muffler just before end of pipe outlet and not in main long muffler before)
    - Removed rear side panels and wiped away the red Port Hedland dust from 2005/2006.
    (Rear quarter panels not re-installed)
    - Removed the 6th and 7th rear Land Rover child's seats from each rear quarter.
    - Taped up the air vents on the drivers side rear quarter panel.
    - Checked all door and rear door seals for damage and repaired where required.

    - Changed wheels (removed spare from front and replaced with mating wheel of other 3).

    Obviously long overdue maintenance.... :-()

    Questions -

1 - Purpose of those rear quarter vents if covered up by the panels?

2- Should I have that 1mm hole in muffler plugged some how or muffler replaced?

3 - The rear quarter panels are a grey colour that matched the 6th, 7th seats we purchased n 2004. We do not need these now, and want to acquire the smae colour rear quarter panels as the rest of the interior (tan colour) - Any suggestions as to where I can obtain these panels in good condition second hand?

What tire pressure should I have for just city driving on the D1?

The wife says she can still smell exhaust fumes after all of this work, so I am puzzled as to what the source of this leak is.

Can exhaust come through the front console (which is broken and cracked)?

    Help?

    1. I think they are for ventilation in European countries and when they arrive here they tape them up.
    2. If it is not a water drain hole, then yes.
    3. try the wreckers.
I run around home on 40psi, but I have 33x12.5x15's on mine and the extra psi helps with tyre squirm on 15" rims, depending on what tyres try mid 30's psi.
If you have ehaust gas leaking in the engine bay then probably yes, but I think you will find it's coming in through the back door seal, Regards Frank.

    Thanks frank.

We re did the rear door seal yesterday as well, and made sure everything is tight fit with the seal.

Also, what sort of bolt head holds the engine head?

It seems it has 6 or 7 edges and is between 8-9mm.

I cannot fit any socket or other to determine if these are still tight.
