I'm looking at buying a 1997 SE7 (4cyl manual).
I don't really know where to start...
- what should i be looking for in terms of trouble?
- what kinds of things go wrong with them?
- what is awesome about them?
etc etc
Any help much appreciated![]()

G'day Miss Talia, I have just finished speaking to DOD! I have had two TDis in my day, one manual and one auto, and both were good machines. Gave less trouble than the later model but that was mainly because of the electrickery involved in the later model.
The engine in the TDi is a good engine once you get used to the turbo lag at start up, but that is simply a matter of getting used to it. They pull well, are fairly economical to run (around 10/100 around town) and generally trouble free as long as it is well maintained and the timing belt change over interval strictly adhered to. Your servicing contacts will surely look after you in this regard.
You will soon enough get to know what is awesome about it as you get used to it and you will soon find out that driving techniques in this particular type of car differ somewhat from the general run of the mill, but you probably already know that.
Regards
Glen
