wheel bearings, uni joints and them such....

Approaching Xmas and since having had to spend some time under the bonnet again recently decided to give myself (?) an early xmas present and tackle some of my Discos issues

Lets start with (hopefully) an easy one.
Ever since I bought the car I noticed a .... well I guess its kind of a vibration at speed. It vaguely resembles the noise an open window triggers, so something like whoop-whopp-whoop in a regular yet slow manner. (....highly intellectual technical description dont you think?...)

It starts at about 80/90 km/h, is more noticeable on acceleration and goes quieter when easing off the accelerator.

Always put it down to the wheels (265/75/16) but recently started hearing a squeaking noise from the left front wheel/or maybe both front wheels
At first it was only when going around corners - then slowly got consistent whenever not going dead straight and the last 2 days it was constantly squeaking after driving it up to temp.

I had been under there a couple of weeks earlier to check the swivel oil, which has apparently been replaced with the one shot grease and theres no leaks anywhere, diff, transfer and gearbox oils are up to scratch.

My next step is to jack up each wheel and check the wheel bearing wobble (had done so every year since buying the car, never had any movement before), but I'd also like to check the uni joints - there seems to be a little grease around one of them on the front driveshaft. Never done this on a 4WD (since this is my first one), now whats the procedure, same as 2WD, neutral and jack up rear end? or anything special to do/look out for?
Also I have read the one shot swivel grease does not need any attention, is that right or does it possibly need a top up?
And a last one, if its neither bearing nor uni joint.... any suggestions what else to check?

Stay put, I will have to tackle a big one regarding rear main seal soon --- but maybe thats going to be a new year resolution.....

    Cheers,
    Simone

PS: wheels are balanced and its not pulling to any side.

oh, and also I have found receipts that state the previous owner having put a poly bush kit and new swivel bearings along with new a frame ball joints (? is that the swivel ball joint ?) and rear radius arm/bushes about 65 000km ago.

If i were you I would be getting rid of those poly bushes and replace them with originals as soon as possible. They rust up bolts, ware out steel parts and are more trouble than they are worth. The original acid cure rubber may be a hastle to work on, but last much longer and give a better ride. I and still cutting out bolts now two years.

Love the irony and my disco loves me...

Still have not found the time and knowledge to inspect the uni joints and bearings.
My bad - now its my problem.
Went to Mandurah (about an hours drive) for work yesterday and after a successful day just on my way back one (or all) of the above **** itself.
First I thought to myself... hang on, where do these corrugations come from...?
HAHA no corrugations. Fantastic vibrations at speeds over 35km/h...

So after a good old costly tow home I am back to square one - or maybe even worse, really hope it didnt damage too much...

Have had a look right then and there, and it seems the front drive shaft has some considerable play but rather than at the unis at the connection to t/case and diff. Is this normal?

If you can't determine if the uni's of the front propshaft are gone, take a photo and post it up - they are simple to fix. K5-13XR I think.

If you do the repair remember to mark the position of the propshaft with something like liquid paper.

If you take it off and drive around: be gentle or you will damage the rear diff.

The play that you are talking about sounds more like backlash in the diff. A fair amount of play here is normal.

There is no need to mark the position of the tail shaft in relation to the diff or transfer case as the shaft is balanced independently. It is only if you separate the two pieces of the shaft that is important to mark for reassembly.
