Well , does anybody know anyone doing repaired steeriing columns ?
Just wondering if anybody, anywhere does service exchange Steering columns as mine is U/S .(93 200 TDI but with R380 and sway bars , an odd one indeed,bought new !). The lower bearing / bush is very sloppy . I used to change heaps of columns out on Pre-82 RRC's ,that came with the solid connection shaft ,Yeah,change the column and fit a late model rubber Uni shaft type ,that fixed the rattle/feedback . .

I do not understand which part you are referring to. Do you mean the lower steering column in the engine bay with a UJ at either end and a rubber damper, or are you talking about the upper column and the bearing at the firewall?

No, I am talking about the lower bush/bearing in the steering column ,and yes the lower part of the steering column is in the engine bay .
So your talking the main upper column and it's all about this part .......

Yeah,thats the right place ,pn ANR7474 , pity mine is a 93 ,not a 95 - 99 which that part number is for.(wonder if there is any difference ?)
Mmmmm .... RAVE cd's that i have don't cover the early D1 ... Got the RRC from 85 to 94 .. and Disco from 95 on .... All seem to declare the column "non servicable" >>>>>> Yea, right

I had a similar shake, turned out to be the ball joint on the end of the pitman arm. You couln't see any movement, but with the Minister Of War And Finance shaking the steering wheel to and fro and actually holding the joint, I could feel the movement inside, replaced it, different truck!!

Thanks jacknz, I reckon I could do a drop arm change in my sleep,Ive done plenty of them,but alas it aint the drop arm ,or the lower shaft unis,or rubber drive ,its the bottom bush in the column. No vagueness in the steering at all ,just a rattle in the Column.
Tell ya a good trick for doing drop arms .
A couple of days before changing it spray the splines on top with a heap of penetrant (sometimes not needed due to leaking output seal)
Then backoff the lock tab ,then undo the Locknut one complete revolution, then redo the lock tab to the new position .(no its not dangerous if you only back off one turn and re-lock)
After a few days it will loosen up on the Taper ,you will kn0w as the steering will ge slightly sloppier. Now thw arm will almost fall off without any need for the big puller . Works every time for me.
