    clutch seals/hydraulics?

clutch pedal has a heap of free play and only engages, disengages close to the bottom of the travel. No fluid loss no obvious leaks. wondering if the fluid is pushing past the seals?
    anyone got ideas please.

That is one possibility, the more likely but less palatable one is a clutch fork on the way to failing (gearbox out).

I am with John. Mine was doing this then it crapped out. I pumped it and it came back better for a couple of weeks then last week I lost it altogether. Pedal came up and stayed there, hard. Drove home clutchless.
Pulled the slave off a couple of days ago and the piston was nearly right out. Looked inside and all looked OK but cant see the pivot. Conclusion is its the pivot ball. I am procrastinating, deciding engine or box out.

well i drove the disco last night for the first time in a couple of days, clutch seems to have fixed itself, got a full pedal again like it was before. I reckon it was hydraulic/air in line somewhere, didnt feel mechanical while there was alot of free play in the pedal, felt to me like hydraulics. see how it goes for the next week or so. I did order a new master and slave cylinder plus new hose to go with it so will still fit them when they turn up.
    finger crossed,

When you take the slave cylinder out, a good torch and a mirror may show you the state of the fork.

On mine all I could see was the pocket for the push rod. Even with an endoscope I could not see the pivot.
Mine came good for a while too before terminal falure.

So when you say fails, you mean bends enough to to get travel or better yet breaks?

Not exactly - the post it pivots on waers/breaks a hole through the fork, which is pressed sheet metal on these.

I had a similar souding issue over the Christmas break. After replacing the slave cylinder seal it all went wrong. One of the fork pivot points had worn no badly that it was allowing the fork to ride up and partly over the fulcrum point.

What feels like pumping it up was actually getting the fork into a position so it doesnt ride up over the fulcrum. Worthwile having a look yourself, and if there is nothing obvious then its most likely a gearbox out issue!

    Good luck
