    drive not engaging (transfer case)

    Hi guys,
Was using TC low range yesterday when heading into the camp site. All was working well, so parked the disco and left her in low range for the night.

All was well this afternoon on the way down from camp until i manually changed my from 1st to 2nd gear whilst in low range (auto box).

When i switch from 1st to 2nd, it would not engage 2nd gear. Tried 3rd and 'D' drive but nothing engaged while the TC was in Low Range.
The gears only work when shift back to TC high gear. Then all was fine again. Was quite tricky navigating out as there was still several steep slopes to decent.

Tried using search function but couldnt find one indicating drive gears not engaging while in low range.

Found this when i got home, but havent tried it yet:
"It's not uncommon for an LT230 to slip out of gear on trailing throttle if it wasn't all the way engauged. They come out with a bang. I find that if the car is stationary when you select transfer ratios they don't always go all the way in. You need the car rolling to ensure the range is fully selected. A mate of mine went on a 4x4 driving course with Duncans off road and they also suggested not selecting while stationary...."

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Yep, I select high or low while rolling along in neutral very slowly. Move the lever quickly too.

If you do it stationary, make sure the lever is full home when you start rolling or it could well pop out of high (or low) when you least expect it.

    Thanks Scouse for the reply.

I'll give the slow rolling a go.....would there be any problems if i try this and drive around in low range on tarmac?

Yesterday when i had the issue.....i was slowly rolling down the hill on 1st gear low range. as the slope eases out i shifted onto 2nd gear (still in low range) but it would not engage 2nd nor any gear i tried after that. So i had to made do on high range for the rest of the slope.

When i got on flat ground, i came to a stand still, tried shifting TC to low range in neutral and select D-drive but the auto box does not engage D, 3rd, 2nd or even 1st (whilst in low range).......does this mean that low range is not fully engage? and that it could have popped out as i changed gear from 1st to 2nd during the slope?

Btw my lever refuses to shift to low range diff lock.....would wd40 help if i spray under the lever?

Forgot to mention its a v8i, auto

    cheers

As long as the centre diff lock isn't engaged then you can drive anywhere you like .

I'd say it's popped out of low range if it drives OK in high range.

Are you saying you can select diff lock from high range but not low range? If so, thats very odd.
If not, then it could just be a 'lack of use' issue. Give the lever a hard thump with your palm. If that doesn't work, you may need to investigate the linkages under the car.

Yes, drives as normal in high range. Hope it was just a pop out scenario. Will try the rolling method next.

Diff lock high range is good....diff lock low range just would not budge.

Edit: oh yea i also think its due to lack of use...or in my case NEVER used before! so maybe the linkages could have seized ?

    Thanks for the help mate

How are you shifting it? I have found some LT230s can be a bit funny. I.e. they don't like shifting from High Lock to Low Lock. However a shift from H (unlock) - L (unlock) and then across to diff lock works fine.

    Hi Isuzurover,
Yea i usually went from Lock high straight to lock low. But have also tried 'H' and the other unlock gears too. Still refused to budge any further when the lever is on the 'H' lock side.

Will try again when i find some loose surface.
Btw would the rolling slowly method also be effective for diff lock?

I also had all the oils serviced about 3k ago, engine, tranny, transfer and axles

Yes it can but don't apply it when the front & rear wheels are spinning at different speeds (stuck in mud for example).

ok i gotta ask this then.......how about in reverse?

say if i am halfway through a hill and low range pops out of gear and i lose drive in the autotranny.

the same method should still apply right? shifting to autotranny to neutral, let the disco slide backwards slowly at the same time re-engaging low range.
