Turn indicators - intermittent problem with blown fuse

    Hi,
Can anyone suggest where to look for likely causes for the turn indicator fuse blowing intermittently?

    So far:

    1) Have dismantled and checked column turn indicator switch and checks out OK.
    2) Have dismantled and checked hazard flasher switch - OK.
    3) Trailer socket wiring checked and OK. Fuse blows with/without trailer attached.
    4) When fuse has blown, all hazards still work.
    5) Indicators may work for a week then blow a fuse or fail as soon as fuse replaced.
    6) Problem may be associated with only right turn but but not yet 100% certain.
    7) Car is 1997 D1 3.9 V8.

I cannot find a matching problem reported on Aulro hence post.

If anyone else has had a similar set of circumstances or can suggest a probable cause can they help out please?

    Thanks
    Rod

When I've seen this in the past it was due to using what looked like an earth, but was actually a live when you turned the lights on. It would take out lights on one side of the car.
Turn the right turn on, then turn on electrical items including:
    - headlights
    - interior light
    - stereo
    - brake lights
    - handbrake
and so on. That will tie down if it is a piece of incorrect wiring.
If it is a chaffed cable then it's going to be after the fuse which might help to narrow down the issues of what cabling to look at

Intermittant makes it harder. I had a similar problem with my Defender (though not intermittant) and and it turned out to be a short in an original bullbar indicator. I finally tracked it down by taking the bulbs out of the right side indicators, then one by one, putting them back in with the indicators 'on'. I've put some snazzy new led lamps in their place.

    Thanks nod 130,

That is something I will check out too. Have had problems with rear lights in the past and burnt contacts so this makes sense.

    Cheers

mine did something funny like this, but it was blowing fuses when the indicator is on and the brake is pressed. perhaps check this is not the case with yours?

had that problem in my defender, was blowing the fuse or would make a buzzing sound from the flasher. what i traced it back too was the fuse holder, the fuse was loose in the clips and i had to take a small flat head screwdriver and close the gap up and make it tighter on the fuse. have'nt had a problem since. hope that helps cheers wally

    Hi

This sounds like there is a short between a positive cable and earth, that is part of the indicators schematics only. So it should be somewhere from just before the flasher fuse (earlier and it should be more parts being affected) and up to the flasher relay. Anywhere after and the hazard should go as well. Try pulling the fuse and use a volt meter between the pins as well as each pin to ground.

Also you could remove the bulbs and the fuse, and make a ohm measure on each part of the cable, to look for a short or power drain. (The resistance should be low if it's just the cable and no "power user" like a bulb on the circuit.

yep, check to see if its not blowing then the brake is pressed and the indicator is on.. mine was doing the same thing (hazards still working).

ended up not pulling the entire roof lining out to trace the wiring loom for the brakes , but bypassing the loom from the brake indicator attached to the back of the pedal, and splicing into the original loom near one of the alpine windows.
