    96 disco 300tdi excessive smoke

Hi I have a 96 tdi disco it runs fine has heaps of power but blows lots of black smoke on start up and billows out when accelerating.
    what is the possible cause?
I have had my tappet clearance done changed my air filters and I suspect my fuel pump has been tweaked.
do the injectors cause billows of smoke out the exhaust when worn?
Also when it is cold it is very hard to start.
Sort of knock when idling and slight smoking out of exhaust.
Probably getting a little less to the tank now about 900 to 1000 kms off a tank of 120 litres.
    any ideas?
    thanks.
yes I have searched but answer specific to my questions are a lot more helpful.

Thanks Black knight is there any way of knowing where the pumps original setting is?
can the timing be checked with out taking the front of the car apart?
    thanks.

yes, you just check the lift height on the IP plunger as well as checking the ecentric cam on the boost compensator, if its got 2 wear marks on it then its been tweaked.

There are four possible adjustments that may have been done, the first three being the most commonly carried out.

    1. Full load fuel delivery rate - Twisting the diaphragm 90 degree's

    2. AFC Star wheel adjustment - increased fuel delivery by less spring resistance

    3. Smoke screw - Increasing low manifold pressure fuel delivery

    4. Full power adjustment - concealed screw adjustment on back of pump - remove anti-tamper cap.

For a better understanding of what to undue have a look at the following.

just used these excellent instructions which made it easy as to do. The cam on mine had 6 wear marks! Put it back close to the first mark, which according the the video is close the factory mark, and viola, far less black smoke, and for some reason seems to be getting better each time I drive? . I'm guessing it's just me getting the gear changes correct (holding second a bit longer, and being gentle on the go pedal in third); it's been a few years out of the saddle...

I have the same problem, but in fact changed my timing belt few months ago.
I can't connect the when it started to smoke and timing belt replacement, but how do you check the timing? To make sure its put on correctly?

If you used timing pins to set the belt up when you renewed it, all should be well. But if you guessed it......

Thanks man, my mechanic replaced the timing belt, but I don't know how he did that, so no way for me to tell.

I don't remember when exactly i noticed the car to smoke, but TDI 300 in did started smoking more sometime after the timing belt replacement.

I guess there is no way of checking it without taking the front of the engine out.
