    Engine oil pouring out!! (fixed)

Last Friday I was driving around the city just fine until I got into the parking lot and some guy pointed out an oil leak from my TDI 300 Disco 97.

Wholly smokes, it was pouring out, the car left a streak of nice black on the pavement.

While the engine off there was no leak, but once I turned it on, I noticed a drip from where engine oil cooling hoses go back to the engine, right above where the oil filter is.

Both fittings on the hoses were so lose I first hand tightened them. 5 min and 19mm wrench it was fixed.

What I think happened, is that I had my timing belt changed 2 months ago and the mechanic must have taken the front off to get sufficient access to the front of the engine. That would include radiator and everything around it. Well, he does not seem to put if back properly in place (@#$%^!!!!).

So lesson for all, check your oil cooling hoses.....

What grass plugs? on the oil lines? or something else?
I am just worrying and need to check again, so please let me know what it is.

Lucky I was in the city, but I wanted to actually buy one of those Little back boxes to help diagnose when something is wrong.

Either that, or install several gauges like water temp and oil pressure, but this Little Box comes with sound alarms already which will be helpful.

Brass plugs that run along what i think is an oil gallery in the block just below the vacuum pump, they also leak oil if loose.

Same thing happened to me a week ago. Probably the same cause. Changed the timing belt a few months back. the oil cooler line was hand loose. got to work and tightened it up. how can it work itself loose after a small thing like changing a timing belt. You would think it would have happened within the first week not months later.

Well, I am going to have a talk with my mechanic.
I think when changing timing belt they took the radiator and everything else out so they can access the front of the engine. If you do that, you would have to take the oil cooler out also, and easiest way I think is to unscrew the fittings in question here. So that's my diagnosis.

But you need to remove the radiator assembly in order to access to the front of the engine where the timing belt is, correct?

So in that process you need to remove the oil cooler and that would mean disconnect the oil pipes from the oil cooler to the engine.
There are two ways of doing that, disconnecting pipes at the engine (leak location) or at the oil cooler (which is difficult.) I think my mechanic disconnected pipes at the engine and never tighten them.

This is from DIFFLOCK manual for timing belt change:
"The combined Oil Cooler/Radiator/Intercooler Assembly is held on to the vehicle .......Gently lift out the Assembly being careful to keep the matrix clear of snags....Store the Oil Cooler/Radiator/Intercooler assembly carefully ...!"

Had the same thing on my D1. They just come loose by themselves.
From memory when I did my timing belt I removed the hoses from the radiator itself - not at the oil filter end. Mine leaked about 2 years after the timing belt was changed, so not related as far as I'm concerned.

Mention it to your mechanic by all means. If they were removed at the oil filter end then fair enough they should have been tightened back up properly - but just be aware he may not have touched them and it could be pure coincidence that they've started leaking soon after.

Yep, me too a couple of years ago. Inlet hose to the oil filter came loose. Luckily I was just idling at the time waiting for a mate who alerted me to the oil gushing out as he walked up to me.
