Dizzy Position
G,day All,
I just had the misfortune to replace the 3.9 engine in my ,93 Disco due to the slipped liner problem. I cant remember the position of the distributor because like an idiot I did not mark anything. When looking at the distributor installed, does the rotor button point down to 6.00 o,clock?
cheers

Well, I assume you have the engine turned to no.1 TDC firing before the dissy is installed? Then the rotor button should end up pointing to the dissy cap terminal that has the no.1 lead in it. Where exactly this is immaterial, but your dissy cap has hopefully still got its leads installed. I believe there is a mark on the dissy body which aligns with the rotor in the factory position for no. 1
Tips: to identify no. 1 TDC firing position, set the timing mark to TDC, remove no.1 plug, apply a length of heater hose to the plug hole, blow in with your mouth. If air blows into the engine, (valves are open) turn the engine 1 full turn and try again.
You will have to move the oil pump drive to allow the dissy to mate with it when it is fully installed. trial and error here.

To get the rotor button lined up with #1 on the dissy cap you will need to turn it (rotor) back a bit as it will rotate as you slide it into the hole and engage the cam gear, you may have to do this a number of times to get it right. to avoid this prblem in the future, set engine to TDC as bee utey described, mark with texta on outside body of dissy directly below where #1 spark plug lead goes into cap.Remove cap and note that rotor button is (should be) pointing to marrk on outside of dissy body. Transfer that mark to top edge of dissy body. Now undo dissy hold in bolt and as you lift dissy out NOTE which way the rotor button turns ( put arrow on side to show direction it turned. Now that you have the dissy out put a different (shape) mark directly where the rotor button is now pointing. when Reinstalling all you need do is make sure you turn the rotor to the second mark and when you slide the dissy back in (if you haven't moved the crank off the former TDC mark, if you have you will have to realign the crank and the oil pump drive, not forgetting the bottom of the dissy shaft will rotate so the oil pump drive will have to be aligned accordingly) the rotor will turn back to where #1 plug lead is, easy to do, harder to explain, Regards Frank.
