A wire from the Neg terminal of second battery should never go to the Alternator... unless you like big sparks.
Got a controller or gizmo for the second battery ?
Yes, everyone likes pics. :p:p:p
By the way, the lighting in the transmission selector window does run hot... needs a bright/hot globe in there 'cos the design is ..... My Classic ran so hot it lifted the transfer mask. - Took the passenger-side globe out and put in a dull LED. - PAX has no reason to worry about 'gears'.

^^yeah, that's what i thought. i'm on holidays now, so i'll put my head in it. :) there should be a controller there somewhere.

OK!
there is a redarc SBI12 in there, still not sure where that wire goes.
it looks long enough to reach the alternator, and the alternator is the only thing i remember unbolting.
Anyway... I managed to get the car going after all these months. yay for me!!
just need to sort out some wiring stuff...
tacho not reading properly, something wrong off the alternator. (tacho to W, right?)
I might need an auto elec to come out and have a look, I'm not sure still which is the 'start' battery and which is the 'aux' battery.
here's the pic.

Your start battery is the one on the Right Hand Side unless they have done some big re-wire!
As I look again at your pic I think your tacho wire is the white single strand wire running to the back of the alternator. My tacho plays up in the wet etc so may need a clean/pull it off/WD40 and put it back on again....
Cant help with the loose wire sorry, good luck with finding it!!

My start battery is on the left, but I suppose it could have been altered by the previous owner.
-
Starter battery is left while standing at the front with the bonnet open. (Or bonnet closed, but then you can't see it. :p )
-
right, cool. that makes sense.
so... this cable, from neg on the aux battery should go to neg on main battery, or ground, or doesn't matter which?
not quite sure where to reconnect that cable to, or run a new one to the main battery...
-
I went and had a look at mine.... Went to take off the alternator cover and it fell off. :( No more cover for me.... The bolt points have broken off the cover leaving no way to secure it.
Anyway, not having a cover made it easier to take this photo for you.

The green at the top is obviously earth/-ve.
The brown/red is +ve. <--Edit: This is an assumption, but can't see what else it would be.
The others i have no idea where they go. Hopefully this is enough for you....

thanks judo, yeah, my alternator is wired correctly.
i just bolted this cable to the chassis, i'll check the charge on it after a weekend of driving around.
drove the car on sunday...... all good!!
it's quite an amazing feeling driving a car around that you've fixed yourself. especially as i'm NOT a mechanic by any stretch, thanks guys, couldn't hav done it without you.

well she seems to be running sweet now. still have my doubts about the second battery setup though.
the redarc should be located near the start battery, but is located near aux. it's had a rotronics system in there at one point based on the placard.
i tried running a compressor from the aux battery after a run on the mundaring power lines, and it wouldn't run it properly, so i'm guessing that either...
a) i've wired the neg cable wrong (poor ground connection, charging poorly..)
b) there is some kind of voltage drop from the isolator being on the wrong side?
c) battery is ****ed from being unplugged for so long (~ 5 months)
is a century deep cycle...
otherwise, she's great. :)
i was dropping some power steering fluid and oil since the last bit of work i did. seems i hadn't tightened up the hoses or the oil filter enough. :/
i'm very slowly figuring this stuff out.
