Can the Hand brake effect an auto trans?

Hi guys, here's one for you to ponder.

Currently I have late Nov 97 build D1 V8 auto with 190K. Recently I noticed when I started the 'Ol' fella up after a good nights kip I would pick 'D', hear the box engage and then sit there without moving. I'd give him a squirt of throttle and he'd lurch forward a little then stick like Suzie in a swamp bog. Give it another hard squirt and 'bang' the trans would engage and off I'd lurch like a Saturn 5 rocket.

It would do this no matter whether I changed between 'R' and 'D' and recently it would do it during the day after only being left standing out the shop. Now my regular stopping proceedure is, Foot brake on, then Hand Brake then into 'P'. Then one day I forgot to put the Hand Brake on I had no trouble. With this in mind I haven't used the Hand Brake to secure my D1 (which I hate) for the last 2 weeks and sure enough I haven't had any issue with selecting 'D' and moving off.

Obviously the Hand Brake is doing something but has anyone else suffered this problem before?

You know that LR's have transmission handbrakes?

I'd say your handbrake is binding and not releasing after being applied for a short while.

potentially 2 things, most likely both at once.

    1. the drum is out of round and
    2. its got oil contamination.

(it will also most likely appreicate a proper adjustment doing on it.)

And to get in before Ron - surely you mean "affect" not "effect"?

I did have a feeling it may have been the cause. I had no idea how to fix it, but I'm very grateful to the wealth of knowledge which comes from this forum

Had exactly this on my first series. The expander was loose and it meant that after you released then the pads stayed out and it takes the extra effort to pull away and then 'bang!' the pads drop off and all is well.

Basically you need to service the handbrake fully, greasing expander adjuster etc and check it all out - chances are that after putting back together it will be fine.

Yep, couldn't have described it better myself. Out of curiosity, how hard and how long would it take to do what you recommend steve? Not affraid of getting my poor old hands dirty but if it requires learning how to become a contortionist, I'm affraid I might be just a little past my prime

You could have corrected it. Select "Edit" then "Go Advanced". That will allow you to edit the thread title.
