    Question 3.9 V8 FUEL ISSUES

    Hey guys.

just looking for some advice on where to find all the sensor that are recomended for cleaning to try and rectify my drop in fuel economy (a bit of a description would help out), i've pull a few bits out and hit them with contact cleaner.

next question i recently changed out my stock exhaust and manifolds to a set of gennie extractors and stock rear pipe, so i noticed no cat convertors and no exhaust gas sensors should there be some and would these effect my running rich. there is a crap load of black soot on the tail pipe,

Any advice would be helpful, i would just love to get back to about 7ltrs per 100 rather then the 4 to 5 im getting currently.

    thanks

You are doing extremely well to get 7l/100km. most of us get 15 plus. TDi's, appear to get 10 to12, or do you mean 7 litres per klm? A bit more info may be needed. Look on this forum and I mean, look, it can take ages as you get distracted.

Catalytic convertors and oxygen sensors were not fitted to Australian spec D1s.

There are 2 major sensors that affect fuel economy.
1 The engine temp sensor to the ECU. This cannot be "cleaned" but can be replaced. at operating temp the resistance across the terminals should be around 300 Ohms.
2 the MAF. This can be cleaned with electronics cleaner sprayed into the small hole visible on the LH , looking through the wire screen.

Other common reasons for poor economy are a broken vacuum advance diaphragm and or the centrifugal advance stuck at retard.
