Some advice please on where to buy a fuel pump for my 1999 3.9L v8i.
It appears to have given up the ghost last night. I can't hear it whir, but still hear the relay click off. No matter what I do can't get it to give me any sort of petrol smell....................the car just won't start.......starter motor just keeps turning over.
Anyways Just spoke to the mechanic. he said $500 including only 1 hours work. So that makes it $400 for the part. And he said no use looking aftermarket unless I want it to break down again.
Yes? No? Any better options please? If it's only an hours work I'll buy a cheaper part if one suitable and pay him to put it in!
I've only been back at work for 4 weeks - this is not what I needed. I finally won the battle with RACQ over the battery warranty (been going on for 7 months) and they replaced it 10 days ago.........car has been running fabulously..........now this! Arrrrrrggghhh!!

I have done this plenty of times, the Bosch aftermarket pump (part number BFP772) is a good match (reliable too) and works well in the LR housing. The pump is easy to access, undo the carpet finisher strip by the back door, remove the round cover plate over the pump and there it is. Before undoing the pump hoses and retainer ring the fuel cap needs to be loosened as the fuel tank holds slight pressure. The mechanic shouldn't have to spend much time doing a pump. The original pressure hose inside the housing can be re-used with some care or the mechanic has to supply some submersible fuel hose to connect it up.

Bee-uty, I think I might actually have a go at doing this myself (shock horror!!) seeing as I've now got the day off because I couldn't get to work.
I've found and removed the cover plate - so that's a start - especially for me!! It definately hasn't seen the light of day in many many years, and has a very nice surrounding of clay of sand!
I'll give repco a ring and see if they have one of those bosch pumps in stock. I suppose I should get some of that hose too incase I damage it. So what do I ask for? Just submersible fuel hose?

It's in-tank fuel hose. I just bought some for the shelf, Mackay part number FHIT8X1, one metre for $25 trade.
Oh and replace the fuel filter at the same time, saves further grief later.

And the 'Danni is a girl" issue strikes again! I just don't seem to have the physicl strength to undo the retainer ring! I can pick up the Bosch pump up the road for $93 - that is certainly better than what the mechanic was quoting! Any suggestions on how I can undo this ring?

clockwise or anti clockwise? which way should I be turning? I know I know stupid question! But at the moment I just don't know!

Ring undoes anticlockwise, tap it with a 1 inch wide piece of steel (or a small piece of hardwood) and a mallet/hammer, gently does it or you'll knock a tooth off the ring. Or make a tool using some steel bent into a U shape with notches for the ring's teeth.
The ring is a sloppy fit .....
Tap it once on this side >O
Tap it then once on the opposite side O<
Repeat the process of tapping opposite sides till it turns freely
It only jambs up the ring if you hit it on one side
