dont forget to change the fuel filter while your at it.

you may need a rubber mat to help grip the ring.

    correct pedro.

DM071 try using a hammer and a block of wood to drift the ring round to start with...

After you clean up the area
hit it in the normal direction of undo (anti-clockwise) in a pattern going around the ring in nearly 180 degree steps. Essentially pretending it was a clock face oriented with 12 in the position closest to the front of the car hit it roughly like this

at the 3oclock position drive it forwards from the back of the vehicle
@ 10 oclock from the front of the vehicle
@ 2 oclock from the back then
@ 9 oclock from the front
@ 1 oclock from the back right
@ 8 oclock from the front left
@ 12 oclock from the right

keep working around in that pattern and eventually you'll see it start to turn typically they become hand tight in about 1/4 of a turn

Be careful of the float/fuel gauge when extracting and during work

    Thanks so much guys.

I've disconnected it (and covered up out/inlets with plastic to stop anything getting in) and have given it a really good clean. I've got to wait till the neighbour gets home to grab a block of wood from their place and I'll give it another go.

in a pinch you can use the jack handle from the vehicle as the drifting rod, just dont hit it too hard.

Many to thanks to all for your assistance!

Once I had help to undo that retainer ring it all went pretty smoothly. I even managed to successfully re-use the in tank hose and didn't need to buy any more!

So............I now know how to do a starter motor and a fuel pump. Next week I will learn the basics when I attempt to change my first set of plugs and leads! Getting 2 leaks welded on the radiator next week too.

The big test now is to see if the pump was responsible for the dreadfully high fuel consumption. Usually once I get down to a 1/4 tank on the gauge I'm lucky to get 50km out of it. Been 30 since I put the pump in yesterday arvo and it's moved only a hairs width, so that's a good sign!

UPDATE: I'm sooooo happy! No more bouts of running rough. No more episodes of surging idle. And have dropped 7L+ per 100k on everyday running around.

I'm looking forward to seeing how little fuel is used once I get it serviced & take it for a run on the highway!!
