    94 300 TDI sluggish in 1st gear.

I've got my first Landy brought sight unseen.

Pretty happy but I'm curious if there's an issue she's a little sluggish off the line in first gear.

I'm not expecting a 10 second car start. She's just really really slow to accelerator and you need to giver quite a bit of throttle until above 2grand on the tacho to get her rolling. All is well plenty of torque in all gears after that.

Normal or something to look at.

Receipts show injectors were done in 2003 was quite a long time ago. clutch and Gearbox recone'd recently.

    Thoughts?

Basically the trouble is you've got a tiny four cylinder diesel engine, and it doesn't respond well until the turbo is doing good stuff to the boost pressure. You could take it to a landy expert for diagnosis, or read lots on the forum on tuning/cleaning/tweaking/exhausts/intercoolers/replacement turbos etc.

turbo comes 'on' from around 1800rpm and it is pretty dead 'off' turbo i did find a bit of improvement after i took the middle muffler out of the equation.
the good thing about these motors is enough power to get the job done albeit slower but the fuel consumption for a 4WD is excellent
well compared to my 1985 MK Patrol turbo diesel it's quick and more power

Might be possible to adjust the fuel pump to get a bit more fuel in down low, but don't go too far or you could have overfuelling.

Did you just cut it out and weld in a bit of pipe? Is there much increase in exhaust noise?

300tdi occupational hazard ... accelerating from standing startYes it is slow off the line, particularly when cold, if the revs are below about 1900. You get to plan every intersection etc. Re centre exhaust mod. A straight pipe replacement, almost no change in exhaust noise. I did mine years ago, and it does help with the standing start issue.Happy to meet up sometime and compare tdi300 etc.

    Cheers guys,

    Glad it's the norm.

I now just get the revs up a little more before letting the clutch out if it's a interesting intersection and she'll move on quick enough. Clutches are a consumable

Otherwise sit back relax and let her get there when she's ready.

In my auto you just left foot brake, raise the revs to about 1800 and then let off the brake and it rockets away (well, maybe not actually rockets, but it does go better).

Thanks for that. Sounds like a worthwhile modification.
