Slow Cranking 300Tdi
Hi Again, just rebuilt my drowned tdi, but it won't start, timing is fine, it just cranks too slowly and drains out quickly then the solenoid flickers. A few days before i drowned it i had used the winch and this had taken the **** out of the battery, it has been on charge for ages but even with jumping off the other disco it still cranks slowly, we are begining to think it may have a buggered starter, as i had noticed it cranking fairly slowly preceeding to its drowning. Any ideas, we are stumped, it has fuel etc, the other thing is how tight should the motor be if you put a rathet on the front of it???, i may have to get one of dads mates to come and have a look.
Cheers
Will

Borrow/Buy a Better Battery and Bung it in. Check all cables for dirty/loose ends.

Run a jumper lead from the negative post on battery to the engine. I have had heaps of 300tdi with earth lead problems.

Well i feel like a bit of a dipstick, because after a new battery, i held the throttle flat and it started within a few turns, it seems even after 2 days on charge the battery was completely stuffed. all is good now, no smoke, pulls on hills, accelerates, essentially it is like new, i love it.
Thanks to everyone for help and advice
Cheers

I find it funny though that even jumping it turned slowly, i guess the old battery sucked off the jumper battery.

If it still has it, replace the old braided ground/earth strap with a nice new one from the parts shop - this really speeds up the starter. Its a cheap fix.
