You can carefully prise it out taking care not to damage the timing case or the crank snout and just as carefully fit the new seal by tapping the outer edge with a suitable drift or a piece of pipe the same diameter of the seal. Or you can remove the timing cover from the block and do it on the bench, there are some good tutourials with pics in the "Good Oil" section of this forum, Regards Frank

If you're replacing the crank, idler and tensioner gears I find they're usually a convenient size for tapping new parts into place.

Also I was debating whether to mention it before since it's such a bad idea, but I actually used a big fat flat screwdriver to get my crank oil seal out..... only caused a small amount of damage in the process. Do NOT recommend!

On one occasion I could not get the seal to budge and I ended drilling a couple of small holes in the seal itself and driving a couple of course thread self tapping screws in, they bite quite well as the seal has a metal inner. Once the screws were in I was able to get a some leverage on the screws and the seal popped out.

I tried self tapping wood screws and managed to pull the screw out of the seal without moving the seal... But I do hear it works well for other people.
