On the 300tdi auto,looking above the wading plug hole on the engine backplate there is an oval plate secured by two bolts.Loosen the smaller one and remove the large one,swivel the plate.You can then insert your timing pin into the larger bolt hole.The pump timing pin should also be inserted into the u shaped slot on the pump hub.Belt tension is 11nm/8.1 ft/lbs.

I think its coming from the cranksprocket that turns the belt, not being tight against the oil seal at the rear , I thought it would slide into place when I fitted the crankcast pulley.I tried hammering it but it did not move .
