    Timing Belt

Changed my timing belt at the weekend , the old one looked in very good condition , but having come so far ,I dicided to change the belt anyway and the tentioner, idler and main flanged drive , I have a 1998 tdi300 D1 auto, having set the fuel pin and lined the cam up with the arrow, the crank is about one minuit after twelve, I could only find a insert for the locking pin at the bottom of the flywheel it says there are two holes on the vertical and use the large one , could not find these? , question can you turn the crank with this pin inserted in the flywheel and does it matter to much that the top of the crank is not at twelve o`clock ?
The hardist thinng for my was getting the new belt on , I have tried to tention it like the old one was , is it better to have it a little loose or does it have to be tight with little movment ?
    Thanks Stewart

PS. I forgot to add , timing belt last changed 80,000km ago and five years ago .

On the 300tdi auto, looking above the wading plug hole on the engine backplate there is an oval plate secured by two bolts.Loosen the smaller one and remove the large one, swivel the plate. You can then insert your timing pin into the larger bolt hole. The pump timing pin should also be inserted into the u shaped slot on the pump hub.Belt tension is 11nm/8.1 ft/lbs.

Thanks Eddy, I found the ovel shaped disk behind the oil sump on the inside of the flywheel , inserted the timing lock pin into the lage hole (13mm) checked the fuel locking pin and the marks lined up perfecly on the centre wheel (dont know its name ) , turned the crack two times and checked all was still inline , now all i have to do is put the thing back togerther.
Now where did I put those bolts?
Oh and set the belt tention @ 11nt

Well got all back togerther , fitted new intercooler , filled up the coolant , she started first time ( as always since I have had her ) went for a drive all sounded good . looked underneath oil every where ( bloody hell ) time to cry I think its coming from the cranksprocket that turns the belt, not being tight against the oil seal at the rear , I thought it would slide into place when I fitted the crankcast pulley.I tried hammering it but it did not move .

    Not happy

Is it coming out the drain hole in the timing cover?

When I put mine back together I cleaned up the crank pulley and put a liberal amount of oil on the back where it goes into the oil seal to make sure it slides in OK. However I must confess I also changed the crank oil seal for a new one, even though it's the first new timing belt since new. How many kms has the vehicle done in total? Do you know if the seal has ever been changed? Either way, I guess now it's leaking it's a case of changing it either way...

There is also an O ring that goes behind the crank pulley from memory.

Did you fit the "O" ring as mentioned by Discomark, you should remove the old one first, there is a crank seal in the timingcover that is bolted to the block. The seal in the outer timing belt cover is a dust seal, usually brown/orange in colour and the centre section rotates in the outer section, so don't get it mixed up with the inner case crank seal (black), Regards Frank.

Thanks frank , I have just taken it all apart . I have found the `O` ring , but how do you remove the seal in the engine block . The one in the timing cover is no problem , I just need to know how to remove the seal inside the crank ?

    Thanks Stewart

I won't lie - I swore for quite some time trying to get that seal out.

You need something to leaver it out with. The correct tool is a decent seal puller:

Just be careful because the material (alloy?) around the seal is quite soft and damages easily...
