Hi there
Has anyone replaced the heater matrix under the dash of a series 1 discovery?
Mine was leaking and needs replacement.
I have started to remove parts of the dash, but I was wondering if any one has replaced the matrix without removing the entire dash assembly as shown in the Haynes manual?
It looks like it is going to be a real pain of a job.
Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Don't need to remove the dash on a '94+. It can be removed via the drivers side footwell.
There have been a few threads here dealing with it. I'll see if I can dig one up........

I used "liquid copper" in my tdi disco to repair the leak in my heater core, i think it is worth giving it a go, i didnt want to remove the whole dash
I've been considering this as mine leaks also. This "liquid copper" gear, I assume it can be bought from super cheap and the like?
Would it cause a problem with the alloy radiators?
Could a slight leak cause minor overheating issues?
I've pretty much replaced the rest of the cooling system, so I'm assuming it will be the heater causing it.
Cool, just checked out those links and printed them for my reference.
I'm fortunate that the dash is the ONLY thing left inside my disco at the moment. It would be good to fix this prior to putting in new carpets.

I actually did this job last week on a very early (91ish I think) V8.
It was not as bad a job as I thought it would be, I did have the benefit of the owner already having had the dash out twice (which is 2 times more than most people I know!).
I think a few gotchas are a couple of heater wires that you will need to snip and create connectors for (I think it was about 2). The heater and blower are a single unit, we had to cut the plastic casing to remove the matrix.
Don't try to split the casing was the advice as they are getting old and you will probably just end up with a big lump of broken plastic.
Now the tricky part if your heater pipes exit in the centre of vehicle like his does then it is a very very tight fit to get the hoses back on. In fact, I was unimpressed as I am sure there is zero clearance from hose to engine, which makes me think that some reduction in length of the at least the lower spigot would be a safe thing to do. I note that my 95 and D2 both have moved the spigots to clear the engine..... which makes me suspicious...
Another tip may be to widen the holes the matrix goes through on the bulkhead so you can fit the hoses to the heater and lead through, may save contorting in the engine bay.
