Viscous fan 300tdi removal
Hi all,
Have had a look at the Rave cd(bought off Dave's interesting things page)
and just wondering how hard/easy it is to get the viscous fan off.
Reason is I have to put the fan cowling back on it-car didnt have one on it when purchased couple months back.
Its a Disco(95) 300 tdi.

very easy to do with the right tool. get a 32mm viscous fan hub spanner, offset to get onto the nut behind the fan, remember its a reverse thread, give it a wack with the hamer and it should unscreww

Yep with the right tool its dead easy changed the hub on our d1 about 2 weeks ago

If you cant source a hub spanner get a standard 32mm and do some "modifications" with the grinder..... i.e. grind one side of the spanner so it fits in the gap on the nut

Hopefully yours will come off easier than mine did, the last time someone had the viscous fan off they used lock tight when they put it back on. Took the mechanic a couple of hours to pull the front of the motor apart and get the fan off.

Guys thanks for all the great advise.
I got my 32mm standard open end and star ring spanner from supercheapauto for AUD$22 less my $10 members credit. its about 450mm long and the ring end has a few uses on the old Disco. 30 minutes of angle grinder later it fits nicely. Dropped the thickness down to 7.5 mm across the face of the spanner.
NOTE the 300TDi viscous fan is a reverse thread, you fit the fan spanner from the top, down to the nut. When viewed standing at the front of the Disco and lookinging into the engine bay and towards the rear of the disco, you then hit the fan spanner with a 1.5kg hammer in a clock wise direction. If you were a yachty you would say from Starboard to port direction.
Comes off easy as, but don't try it the reverse (anticlockwise) way like the 3.9 V8 youtube videos show, doesn't come off that way no matter how hard you hit it. Seems the 300TDi is yet again 'special'
I've put Marine Grade Lanolin on the thread, as I'll be doing a few jobs that require it coming off over the next few weeks.

Hey just for the knowledge i have also seen these spanners on the shelf at tradetool for like 20 bucks
