Most likely the ignition module on the side of the dizzy. It overheats in there and creates dry joints that cause short circuits at different temperatures.

Hi all, crazy problem with my disco. 94 duel fuel, all week driving sweet! Today would not start, checked all gas lines, relays n wiring. Could not find an issue, but would not start! Tried again but would not start. 1 hour later , it started again with no change, and it would start every hour after that. It seems it starts every hour! I'm thinking its a coil breaking down.
thanks

Thanks, I did not think of that! Is it a serviceable item(lubeup) Or just buy a new one.
Thanks
Just buy another one - somewhere around $80-$120 if you shop around.

Hey fellahs
Didn't that ign module get re-sited on the radiator core support directly in front of the diz for better cooling etc.
On this side you can buy a kit which puts a "pass through" module on the diz then mount the new module on a bracket by the coil or by the radiator. Comes with new harness etc. (Applicable to 3.5 & 3,9 engines)
It looks like this:-
Amplifier Module Relocation Kit (Genuine Part # STC1856) - Land Rover kits from Atlantic British
Should be available down your way

I had this starting problem with my 98 V8i. The amplifier module on mine is the later one mounted near the coil. The damn thing nearly drove me insane! It was weird! It would not start from cold and just putting a finger on a coil terminal would cure it! Replaced all the external parts, module, coil, remade all the connections, etc., went on for months until it finally quit altogether.
After having the thing tilt tray towed to a local shop they spent a week trying to track it down! Finally, at my insistence, they tried a complete new (used) distributor, and that got it going. It was the magnetic assembly inside the dizzy that was faulty. I have since spoken to another service tech about it and he said straight away that is what he has found previously.
The amp module is in a bad place and it could well be the problem, and as posted already, there is a kit available to move it next to the coil.
have a search for Beeuteys posts on fitting a common Bosch BIM024 module.
There I saved him a post.

Thanks Philip, but the thread on the conversion's here anyway:

'98 should have it next to the coil ('96-on IMHO) but they still fail, regular as clockwork. Here is my late model conversion:
Description here:
Lucas ignition amplifier replacement by Bosch 024
Oh and distributor pickup failure does happen, like the one 400HPongas sent me to repair/replace, but Lucas amp failure is about 100 times more common.
Thanks for all your imput, just read the 11 page module/coil swap! Looks like its time to buy some parts and do an upgrade. I'll get the Mec717 coil and the BIM 024 module.
Cheers
