    intermittent overheating

    Hi guys......

I have a 96 disco, 3.9 motor with an intermittent overheating problem. I am currently trying to drive from Adelaide to Melbourne and the temp is all over the place. Starts off ok, might drive for half hour, then temp starts to climb. Will sit at about halfway on gauge for 10mins or so then climb as high as the top white mark and will hover around there until I stop and let it cool again. No lose of coolant is obvious, t/stat has recently been replaced. As I need to make it to Melbourne and back to Adelaide this weekend....... All help would be great!!

    Thanks

    Kel

    more info

Forgot to mention...... Fan is good, running 16inch thermo. Getting plenty of air flow through.

Have just driven 90k's at around 90kph (took me about an hour ) temp gauge sat about 1/4 mark the whole time, as soon as upped it to 100kph, temp started to climb again

    Cheers

it doesn,t help you fix the problem but if it looks like its getting hot whilst you are somewhere you can,t/don,t want to stop, try putting the heater on full, its not comfortable but in an emergency it can help get the temp down by adding another fan and radiator, just not very comfortable on a warm day.

I had twin thermo fans on a 3.9L V8 and couldnt keep it in check.

Is this change to thermo recent?

Also, check thermostat... May be not opening properly.

How old is the radiator? Has it been recently flushed etc?

I know you said the thermostat is new, but I'd take it out and see what it does.

Could you possibly have an air lock in the cooling system, have you run it with the radiator cap off, front slightly up hill to make sure all the air is out ?

    Just a few suggestions

    Hi Guys,

will remove and check t/stat and give radiator a flush this morning. The radiator has had a flush a couple of months ago, but only a quick flush, so will give that a better go over this morning.

If I remove the t/stat completely and run it without it, will this have an effect on anything else?

    Cheers

    Thanks guys

No it won't, it just means the coolant will constantly flow. If it still over heats then you either have a faulty water pump or partially blocked radiator.

A radiator flush does nothing on these radiators. The channels are very fine and block. The best thing to do would be to get the radiator rodded. This is where the end tanks are removed and rods pushed though the channels to clean them. If you remove the radiator it's not very expensive. Around $100. If your stuck in Melbourne I can recommend a radiator guy in Essendon that does a good job.

    I had a similar problem.
Found out the thermostat that i was sold was faulty, then the 2nd one was the incorrect temperature.

Ensure the new thermostat is the same as what was in, and not was sold.

Hope you come right.. Its very frustrating watching the temp gauge the entire time. Become a habit of mine.

Hi mate, had a similar problem on our way to the Cape in our V8i recently. Replaced the thermo fans but no change. Car got hot a few times on the long pulls and with A/c on. I was racking my brain when I rang Tim at Townsville's All Land Rover . (Tim is a Landrover Guru) He told me over the phone that it wasn't my thermo fans and that it would be my viscous hub. I replied that my viscous hub was working as I could hear it suck air when I started the engine when cold. He still said it was viscous hub and sent me one up to Weipa. I fitted the hub and no more problems for the rest of the trip. We were towing around a ton with our camper. It's a cheap fix, less than $200 and east to replace.
Tim was saying that the thermo fans on the D1 only come on when the a/c is in use and dont affect cooling unless the a/c is on.
    Cheers, Rick.
