Just got the new/old '98 Tdi re-rego'd and back on the road yesterday after a 6 month lay-off to sort a few things, all good and nice to have it back but it has twice since yesterday refused to turn over off the starter, just turn the key all the warning lights and glow plug stuff happens but the start position yields nada, nought, zip. It has been starting fine for all the lay-up months, and started yesterday morning and this morning ok the first times and other times but twice, she no go, it will "roll start" no probs.
This afternoon I jerked at the wires that go to the starter motor and are hidden behind the Turbo-charger, (luckily engine was considerably cool), I am not sure what I did but the old bugger started next try.
Is this a normal Landrover problem with Disco's, I remember now our last 300Tdi, a well worn old '97 had at some time had a relay fitted into the start circuit, maybe that is why???, any thoughts guys. Oh, it is an S model with no engine fancy electrics (I hope), just central locking and power windows
It is most likely the thin wire that goes from the starter switch to the starter solenoid, in time the vibrations and heat have loosened the crimp in the terminal connector.
On both my Disco's, I replaced the crimped on connector with a new one, with that fixed, the problem's have gone away.
