blown engine
Hi All,
After 6 solid years of driving my 97 300tdi disco 1, it seems my beauty engine has gone and chucked a biggie! Just got back from Gnaraloo station, 12 days of bush and beach. Drove up and down with a small jayco windup hanging off the back and never missed a beat. But when I got home, after a few days noticed a few drops of coolant leaking from the water pump. changed out the pump, fired it up - bang! Timing belt jumped a tooth - took it in and the boys couldn't get it to turn past #4 cylinder. Never got hot! Now I'm looking at getting a new engine form Turner Engineering. Has anyone used them before? Just want my beloved Landi back! She only had 170k on the clock and has always been looked after - I am in the dumps! true..

befor you go to turners why not pull the head and have a look, Turners stuff is good but if you buy the new mwm rear main seal do not use it with the "gasket" in the bottom end kit- turners advice[but they dont remove it from the kit!]

did the boys fit a new belt before they tried to turn it over,if not could be the valves on number 4 are open jamming the piston.at least take the tappet cover off

are you looking for an excuse to spend money on a new motor?
Honestly if the belt slipped and your engine locked from a start up there may be very little damage... you may only need to replace timing belt and and some push rods.

Well I'm just refitting my rebuilt 300tdi. Rebuild it yourself it's easy as and cheap for a diesel, your up for about $1800 if you picky. I have done everything new rings, bearings, crank ground to match, head checked and faced, water pump, radiator flush an new clutch!
It's about 3weeks worth of work if you are organized and methodical. You just have to be clean, slow and precise when rebuilding

Thanks Lads,
Yeah, we did have a look at the rockers and valves all moving. Cranked it over manually with a big pipe on the end (it took 4ft of pipe to turn the crank). still hangs on number four. Taking the head off today to have a better look. I get the feeling that the piston is burnt, that's why I'm starting to chase new blocks. Can't seem to make sense as to why it got hot...

It may be a common problem? When I bought my disco with a spun big end in it I was given a second motor. I was told it had a good crank, and it was believed the whole bottom end was good. Probably only a snapped timing belt from poor maintenance.
I decide to make one new motor from the two I had. As I stripped the "good" bottom end number 4 piston was burnt and scored bad! Block was scratched deep and will now be my coffee table in my games room. I think number 4 seized and snapped the timing belt
So maybe it's more common than you think.

Yeah cheers Nico,
Pulled the head and it turns out that the head gasket was blown internally and a bit of corrosion built up in the #4 cylinder. Bent con rod and scored cylinder amongst other things. Gonna buy a rebuild form Turner Eng. in england - they also offer performance heads, could always use a bit more form the 300tdi.
It's pricy, but the rest of the car is great and it's a lot cheaper than trying to buy someone else's problem!
Thanks for the input!
Cheers

HI Benji333,
I got all my parts from Turner Engineering, great service and the parts all fitted and worked. Also took the option of the performance head, still as slow as a 300tdi is but the economy is much better. I also fitted new injectors as well, seemed worth while. And I fitted an engine temp protector, might be something to consider.
Turner Engineering had all the stuff on my doorstep inside seven days, very impressed.

Cheers Nomad9,
I 've decided to go with Turner too, so it's good to know things worked out for ya! 7 days, wow!! Did you have any issues with customs?
I too am going with the performance head - was hoping for a bit more power but I'll settle for better economy. I have talked to a local landi mechanic about getting a bit more out of the 300tdi. He reckons that a bit of a tweek of the fuel lifter and something to do with setting the turbo boost and vola! I'll let ya know once I get an engine to tweek...!
I've also talked to a mate who runs a gas convert on his diesel, he tested 20% more power on a dyno!
Thinking about new injectors as well. Are they just standard or do they make increased performance?
