Love the auto/manual arguments! My D2 TD5 Auto with a chip is great off road, and for towing it is amazing. My D1 300TDi is a manual, Ashcroft suffix L, with MaxiDrive low range T/C gearing. Great off road, but hopeless as a tow car. Love them both, but it's horses for courses IMO. If I could have only one, it would be the D2, but it would get the T/C mods. The auto just walks over things. With the T/C mods it would be fine on steep descents. Better than HDC at any rate.
Dave, it doesn't need to be a stick. Mine failed because one of the quick conect cooler lines decided to quick disconnect. Those things are going to be the first up against the wall when it comes home.
