Maybe another opinion from a different specialist?
I have found MR auto at Redcliffe excellent.
Re mechanic - unless he's paying - get a 2nd opinion fast.

Where and who is the mechanic? (send that in in a PM) A timing belt takes all of a day if your drunk..
even in that state if youve got the right gear its redonkulously hard to cock it up.
Depending on when you want it looked at I might be able to swing by...

If you've benefited from one or more of my posts please remember, your taxes paid for my skill sets, I'm just trying to make sure you get your monies worth.
If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
Rick, I didn't know that, I was under the impression that the kit came with whatever OS piston you needed, say for instance if your bore would clean up at 30 thou. you would order 30 thou. OS pistons.
I have a set of LR genuine Pistons @ 60 thou. OS, what is the limit do you know, Regards Frank.
Frank, I've posted bore sizes and maximum OS piston sizes once before and I can't find the bloody post !
IIRC the 2.8 uses a 93mm bore and the Tdi is something like 90.5mm ?
If that's right, 2.5mm = 0.100" bigger bore which is a loooong way, particularly if a block has any core shift, and it's not unknown in Landy blocks apparently.
Wow you guys are pretty awesome...but I guess you know that.
Thanks so much for all your advice and even offers of help. That's pretty great.
From here it's pretty much out of my hands......as if it was ever in my hands anyway.
The mechanic has sourced a serviced engine and hubby says he'll probably go with that. He'll have his beloved Disco back and I'll be juggling the bank balance. Oh well. If this is the worst problem we have this year....it will be a very good year.
I will refer hubby to join this forum. He might even learn something.
