    Can I use a Bosch gt40r coil

Hi guy looks like my coil is buggered I can't touch it without getting zapped, so I went to super cheap auto and they had the Bosch su12, su12r and the gt40r with only $5 different in price so thought I could get the better one, but first the Q is can I use that coil?

Short answer is "no". Find a second hand electronic coil, much more likely to work.

I used the Bosh GT 40 electronic coil (no resistor) with the solid resin core on my V8 Disco with no problems for years, Regards Frank.

A points coil will work but not very well.
An electronic coil is wound much differently and provides a larger voltage and spark..
Now I am at the very limit of my understanding but AFAIK a points coil is "current limiting" so that it will not draw more current than can be handled by the switch ( points), where an electronic coil current is controlled by the switch or amplifier.
    There is an explanation here
Technical Help - Ignition Coil Questions??? - THE H.A.M.B.
I did the opposite an blew a Luminition in 10 seconds, ie electronic coil on Luminition, which is only a transistorised switch. In my defence I DID ask the importer who said "it's not recommended" in an unsure manner while the new box said "IN NO CIRCUMSTANCES BLAH BLAH ."

I had a customer who was told to use a GT40, I told him not to, then he always complained about poor running, when I found out he was still running the GT40 I swapped it out on the spot and he never looked back.

NB it will run, but the spark will be weak, maybe adequate but not optimum.

With a normal coil, you are pushing it to get 30-35Kv output, with something like a GT40 you might get 40-45Kv output. With most HEI systems you are looking at 60Kv+,hence why they have warning stickers regarding output can kill

The coil fitted in the above pics I originally fitted to my 93 Disco 3.5 V8, performance was great, when I sold this vehicle I fitted this same coil to my next 93 Disco with a 4L cross bolt engine with all the 3.5 electronic and fuel system (pictured) and as stated earlier outperformed the original coil easily. This coil was designed to run with an elctronic dissy, not a points dissy, Regards Frank.

OK I'll bite. Where/when did you get this coil? I never saw this version in all the years I sold coils for points cars. The last Bosch packed GT40 I bought was a cheap relabelled oil filled type.

..... and it was red body paint with a flame design on the label behind the "GT 40" Oil filled AFAIR.
