    MAF & idle woes

    Hi

I'm wondering if anyone has had experience fitting a new mass airflow meter?

We have a 1995 3.9l Discovery which has been gas converted. It has always had intermittent backfire issues and recently began idling at around 1500rpm.

My trawling of the internet led me to order a new MAF as I understand that these can be damaged by backfires and may have been the cause of the idle problem. Unfortunately there has been no improvement.

Does the MAF need to be 'set' or 'configured' in some way or are we just way off target here? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

    Cheers - David

G'day David, yes you can adjust the MAF voltage just do a search on this here but it might be worth checking the stepper motor as it plays a bigger role in the idle speed. It would also be worth getting your distributor checked as well.

Backfiring doesn't seem all that fatal to MAF's on these, apart from knocking out the mesh. Dirt and oil is by far a greater risk, often due to a broken air cleaner or incorrect breather hose position.

I would unscrew the idle air control (IAC) valve (AKA stepper) from the back of the manifold, soak it in carby cleaner. Don't force the spindle, it has delicate parts. I've seen these jam after a backfire.

Also look for loose hose joints on the various idle circuits.

There is a manual idle adjuster screw on top of the manifold near the throttle butterfly, screw it in a bit with a 3/16 allen key.

    Smile Boom!

Agree with B on this - most probably ill fitting/blown off hoses or jammed IAC. But also check that the throttle plate hasn't been damaged by the explosive forces of the backfiring - small twist, jamming in its return to the base idle position, throttle cable dislodged from its return stop.

If the IAC is damaged, the replacement IAC controller is Standard ISC-030. Fits Camira, Land Rover, about $65-70.

Thanks to everyone who replied - plenty to look at over the weekend.

Will post my findings when I get to the bottom of it all.

    Cheers - David

I've just seen this and all that sounds good, but if you haven't already you've got to replace your plugs and leads with the recommended ones for a V8 on gas (I'm sure bee utey will be able to tell you which ones) and set the timing to 10 degrees beyond top dead centre...it's been a while since I played on a gas V8 but my old one had an occasional backfire which got worse and worse and I tried a bunch of things but in the end a new set of the right plugs and leads fixed it right up so it didn't happen again. Worked absolute wonders! I used Bosch from memory.
