Thread: New Land Rover owner with a couple problems

Hi guys,
Just figured i would say hi and get some advice.
I have been browsing thr forums for a while and figured joining the community would definitely be the best way to find out more about my newly acquired Disco.

I managed to get myself a 1996 Discovery 300Tdi Auto.
I got it at an awesome price which naturally means that there are a few minor problems with it.

One issue being the fact that the SRS light is always on. The previous owner said that they had this checked out and the mechanic concluded that it was not an issue however was not sure of how to turn off the SRS light. (Shown on the reciept from one of its more recent services, so not just the previous owner trying to get rid of it with problems) Is there an easy way to do it (other than taking it out ) that doesnt involve taking it to a LR specialist mechanic or is it a little more complicated than that?

Another is that the rear power windows are not working. I did a quick bit of research and diagnosed the problem as just an issue with the little power window computer behind the glovebox. I pulled it out and sure enough there was a dry solder join on the board.

I am reasonably capable with a soldering iron so i desoldered and resoldered the join and any others that looked suspect. I temporarily reinstalled the board and it worked. But not for long.
It worked properly for about 5 minutes befor cutting out. This pattern repeated for a little while and i gave up to have a think.

I assume its an issue with one of the IC's or relays because the rest of the components look ok to me. Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem could be?

I do have another on the way that i picked up cheap on ebay so i may just swap in that one but if i can get the one thats in the car working i think i can resell the other one for a profit

Also, does anyone know of a good source for replacement instrument surrounds?

I had this problem a couple yrs back when i had a D1,
Took it to a LR specialist to see what the problem was, he plugged in his diagnostic, but it wouldn't communicate with the SRS unit, I was there at the time and was told i'd have to leave it with him to troubleshoot the problem, but i didn't.
It was obvious to me that the control unit for the SRS was bung as it couldn't communicate & he had the correct diagnostic machine.
This control unit is yellow & under the center console cubby, yes you have to remove the center console to refit a replacement.
I sourced a second hand one, disconnected the battery & fitted.
after that my SRS light went out as it should after reconnecting the battery & turning on the ignition.

You will have to get it diagnosed, it may be something more simple in your case but if it won't connect to the diagnostic, you will have a rough idea what to do.
