    Ollie,

I think I know how you feel about the finances, I remember being in a similar situation, not only with rust but engines as well. I recall putting rings into engines without doing anything else to them. But SLOWBOAT is right, those engines would last a while and they soon be heavy breathing again. I don't think you will get a good result using fiberglass. I don't know that you will get the strength and still have a thin enough panel to slip the rubber back over.

If your not doing a classic resto and you are just going to use a spray can to paint it and it is only a bush pig then go which ever way you can afford. Learn about fiberglass the practical way by doing something yourself.

But if your going to go to the trouble of buying colour matched paint and going to throw a couple of coats on, clear etc then not only will you be wasting all your prep time but also the cost of the paints, thinners, wet and dry, spray putty, cutting compound etc.

    DONT fiberglass...

ignoring the bun fight of structural integrity

unless you get the prep work perfect and get the resin on before the parent metal has a chance to oxidise then its just going to rust out under the fiberglass then trap more moisture and that will increase the rust rate.

If you have a look at the photos in my disco wrecking thread you can see the end result of a badly applied fiberglass patch, the rust hole in the passangers side rear wheel had been glassed and had turned into a hole a bout 8 inches around.

a similar patch job had been done on the alipine window and when I pulled out the rubber seal the fibreglass stuck to the rubberseal and came out in one large piece along with a bunch of rust. I'm assuming it had at least been a decentish repair job as I didnt pick the fibreglassing untill I had the rubber out but to be fair I wasnt really looking for it as Im wrecking the vehicle, I may have seen it and just written it of as rust I dont care about.

If youd like drop me a PM with the measurements of the bit of rust you need to replace and I'll have at the best section of alpine window I have on that body, a bit of grit blasting welding and polishing will get it in..

I'm tipping that waiting out a clear day and offering a carton to someone who can do a good mig weld will see the replacement section in and more reliable than the fiberglass job.

Well I finally got the job finished last night, sorry Blnight.aus & Slug Burner didn't see your posts untill this morning.

Anyway I am happy with the results, whether it last the distance time will tell.

I have decided not to put up photos & hints as I don't wish for others to see them and decide to go down the same path, when it (fibreglassing) is clearly not the best option.

    Regards
    Rich

Ollie, I'd still take Dave up on the offer of the cancer free sections in case you need to revisit the problem. They won't take up much room.

too late the body is now upside down in the trailer waiting on the metal recyclers opening.

I have another one in the yard that may be getting cut up next year.
