You must have a lot of downhill roads in Belgrave! There is no way I have ever seen 7.6L/100 out of my 300TDi.......

If im very kind to my 300TDI auto I can get 8.5L/100 but that is over a short distance, like 100 km. As soon as I drive normally its up to 9.5-10.5L/100 but I do live in the Adelaide Hills so need to use the loud peddle quite a bit.

Land Rover Monthly recently had a series of articles covering an attempt on the London to Cape Town driving record done in a 2001 Td5 Discovery. They succeed in completing the 15,270km trip in 11 days 14 hours and 11 minutes.

Despite concerns expressed about the electronics in the preparation stages of the attempt, and carrying spare ECU's just in case the trip was essentially trouble free. The third last para of the final installment reads:

From the sounds of that they did use a diagnostic tool (Autologic) to reset the ABS system. I'd suggest that picking up something like a Nanocom EVO (approx. $400ish) is one of the best long term investments a D2 owner can make as workshops (if you can find one) will usually charge in the order $100+ just to hook the car up to their diagnostic system. Knowing you have the ability to access virtually every function of every ECU on the vehicle removes much of the fear of the unknown that is embodied in the "evil electrickery" comments.

Preaching to the converted mate, I wouldn't hesitate to take my Td5 anywhere; simpson, cape, kimberlies

Nowhere near 7.6 in the Dandenongs. Trips to Adelaide, Flinders, and countless trips to the High country I would get around 7.6 on the highway runs. Now that the old girl is 340K old it still does 8.7 -9.5L around town and the hills without the aircon on.

Keep your wool on. I was simply pointing out that your opinion (concerned about Td5 electronics) was at odds with your experience (50K km without dramas). Your experience reflects the reality that the Td5 electronics are actually very reliable. As you say "experience speaks louder".

    cheers

just to clarify earlier stated that the td5 is comon rail, its actually unit injected, 2 very different systems.
ive had a 300tdi and td5 and really like my td5 refinements, its a little unfair to compare an 04 with a 97 but i would take either on a trip anywhere, if i lived in a remote area I would pick a tdi, i still dont believe i could drive my td5 through water and mud and be trouble free as the tdi was, but thats old skool reliable vs new tech power and refinement
