    Auto Whine

    1994 Disco V8i Auto

This whine in the auto or transfer case is really bugging me, it's not overly loud but is a constant pain, I have recorded it and attached the recording, I hope it is audible enough for some one to be able to identify the source and maybe suggest a remedy or if there is some additive I could add to the oil/s to tone it down a bit.

    I hope this attachment works.

I have a 96 V8 auto that makes exactly the same sound around 30 to 50 klms
am fairly certain its the transfer case as the sound doesn't change even if you manually change gears. I have just learnt to live with it.
I think they call it a known characteristic.

    Thanks mate,

    Appears to be the case.

Back in the old days when we used to get diff whine, we would just stuff them with orange peels and banana skins, that used to shut them up for a while, wonder if it would work on transfer cases

If it remains proportional to road speed in low ratio, then it's diff noise. If not, it's transfer - and that's what I think it is. A diff making that much noise at low speed would be shrieking at 100.

    Thanks mate,

I know it's not diff noise, I was just reminiscing about the cures used in the old days when things appeared to be much simpler.

    Bear with me on this one;

On another note, I have this issue with the auto, when cruising up to a set of red lights the auto will clunk when downshifting before coming to a stop - yet if I have to brake harder because the lights have just changed to red it dos'nt do it.

What I have noticed is when taking off from a standing start the auto changes up from 1st to 2nd by the time you have reached 20kph - yet when stopping the clunk comes in when it downshifts between 30-25kph.

So I am wondering, if when stopping the auto is changing back into 1st gear at too higher speed and this is what is causing the clunk.

Or does the auto naturally downshift in 3-2-1 pattern, which would then lead me to believe the clunk could be happening when it downshifts to 2nd gear due to the 30-25kph range when it happens, but if the clunk is happening in 2nd gear shouldn't I still be able to hear it then change down to 1st before stopping if the 3-2-1 pattern applies.

Yet as I say if I have to brake harder when stopping, there is no clunk.

    Your thoughts appreciated

    Regards
    Rich
