Just jumping in on the same topic...... Does anyone have any suggestions about the best oils to use. I have read that modern synthetics are not really appropriate for the older vehicles. Mine is a Disco 1 300tdi.

To me the one thing you can't do without is one of these,

Tom Thumb Pump - Utility, 1 Litre

or similar ($29 from supercheap) it is just the right size/height for crawling around under the car & works a treat.

    Regards

What I do is to get two lengths of hose pipe or equivalent (500 mm should do), stick the ends into your oil container. Then completely seal around the top of the container with duct tape making it airtight.
Hose 1 goes to diff, gearbox etc and hose 2 is attached to your air compressor. When you turn on compressor oil will be pushed out hose 1.
The end of hose 1 in the container needs to be submerged in the oil.
All you have to do then is be sure to turn off compressor when the required amount of oil has been deposited.
Hope that makes sense it makes the job much easier.

    ALWAYS
    • undo the filler plug before you undo the drain plug.
    • place a piece of shade cloth over the drain bucket (or fly screen mesh)
    • lay out a couple of garbage bags under everything before you start
    • roll up your sleeves
    • have a large workshop towel handy with you under the vehicle

    because

    • you'll drain it and then not be able to move the car with no oil in it because you cant get the filler plug out
    • you will drop the drain plug into the bucket
    • you will spill the old oil if not right at the start then at the end when the wind blows the last little bits everywhere but the bucket
    • you will get most of the first oil up your sleeve if you dont
    • you'll cover you hands and the tools with oil and the first thing you grab at to get out to get a rag will get covered in gear oil.

You were standing watching me do an oil change yesterday weren't you Dave?

I dropped the sump plug in the bucket.
    Oil ran down my arm
The oil missed the drain tub that I had thought was positioned correctly. Luckily it only spread about 2 litres of warm oil on the garage floor.
First rags used to stem the flow of oil across the floor, trying to corral it into a puddle rather than a stream. Bugger. No more rags to clean my arms/hands/face.

All I can say is - do as Dave says. I'm not going to attempt to give any tips.

lets just say I've had the pleasure of educating one or 2 appies...

I may or may not own a sump plug for an isuzu that has only 2 turns of thread on it up near the head........

I'm now way to lazy to get under most vehicles so I just stick the oil sucker down the dipstick.

You will need a Torx55 bit to get the top filler bolt out from the top of the R380. Make sure you can undo it BEFORE you drain the oil. In case some one has damaged the nut.

The filler plug for the LT230 is sometimes hard to find as it's hidden behind the hand brake cable. Every one I have done has been so tight and a LONGGGG breaker bar was needed to undo GRRRRRR
