HI,

I know there's been a lot of threads on this subject but i havent found exactly what im looking for.

I noticed when driving my disco 1 1996 300tdi in low range locked sometimes under load there is a diff or gearbox whine near the front of the car. from inside the car you can sometimes hear it when on soft sand or powering through something in 2nd or 3rd.

when i let my friend drive it up a hill i was standing outside and you can hear it a bit lounder but i wasnt about to stick my head under a moving 2 tonne vehicle.

the whine isnt overly loud and seems to be only in low range locked (probably).

is this something to worry about? i mean is it normal for the gears to whine a bit? i would have thought they do especially in low range but i just want to make sure.

all the oils were done by the previous owner not long before i bought it. according to receipts. i havent checked the levels though but on the weekend i am going to buy a few drums of lubricants for future maint. and ill check them then.

any feedback would be appreciated.

thanks,

Fausto79

PS ive added a few more photos from my adventures on my profile. these are at the pines north of perth. theres a huge playground there. i know these are a bit tame but it was a last minute decision to go in there and didnt have recovery stuff with me so i didnt take too many risks.
