May not be the end of the world (read cyl head). Did the rad hose blow because of a/. blown head gasket, b/. old hose, c/. faulty thermostat, d/. loose clamp, e/. crook rad cap or some other reason ?

Might not be a total loss, I'd expect better metal in a new head so even if it's bent it may be machinable .

Don't know much about these Elring gaskets that I've seen mentioned here, what's the difference ?, used to use copious quantities of Hylomar in the old days is this still done ?

It is Christmas and with a bit of luck you may get away with a new (better quality) head gasket , though I would change the thermostat and rad cap out of spite anyway.

Regarding head bolts, if they're not overstretched why toss them away ? , I'm pretty sure the LR manual says they're good for 5 uses.

I'm waiting for my head and bits from Turners. They seem very efficient, ordered it on Boxing Day and it's been shipped already.

    Good luck.

dunno yet will take it apart this week, thermostat rad cap, hose and clamps plus head gasket and head where all less than 4 months old, thats what ****es me orrff. as for head bolts, I coudnt remeber how many uses they get but they are cheap enough to replace anyhow

I had the same problem with TDI 300 pushing coolant out of the expansion tank. I discovered the head had gone soft in the middle allowing exhaust gases to enter the water galleries only when the engine was at working temp. I believe the head should be about 130 Brunel (which mine was around the edge of the head) but it was 65 Brunel in the middle.
I had 2 options to repair it. The first was to get the head re-tempered but I was told they need 100 heads to do at the same time. The other option was to buy a new head and I was told to get one from Argentina (I think) because they don't go soft. All up it cost about $3500 about 5 years ago (this also included new valves, stem seals, etc. Hope this helps.
