    Smile S1 disco

    hi all just joined the forum and thort i wud introduce meself i have a 93 disco which i just got,I have one query when looking under the front bumper the first thing seen is a tube which goes across the chassis it hangs down on two v shaped brackets i think its there to protect the steering rods from rock damage is this the case? and is this thing necessary for a rwc as its corroded at one end where it was welded to the bracket at the moment this is the only majorish thing i can see wrong underneath,there is no other rust of any significence.

    i am enjoying reading some of your stories and will hopfully put some of my own on as the saga of the disco unfolds thanx in advance john

    Go to your local exhaust shop with the diameter of the pipe and get a length to suit, cut out the old one and weld in the new bit, if you can't weld ask the exhaust bloke to weld it in, shouldn't cost more than $50 if you do the prep work, welcome to the Forum, regards Frank.

    hi i dont intend to hit anything but i wanted to know if this this is structural or not cos i need to get a roadworthy done so i can change it into my name(its still got six months rego on it) i can fix it as i drive it then john

    Depends on the inspector, he/she may consider it structural, no use arguing with them and if they see rust damage there they may try and find more elsewhere, Regards Frank.

    It is an accessory steering guard. Remove it for the RWC. It wasn't on the vehicle when built.

    Ron , i think you'll find that it is in fact factory fitted and came on the RRC some time after EFI versions and then on all D1's.

    When I bought our "93 Disco from the original owner (from new) there was no steering guard fitted. He said it never had one.

    If it's rusty and you're concerned just take it off for RWC.

    Maybe easily fixable ??

    When we bought our '98 D1 that "protection bar' was rusted through in spots and also slightly bent, right in the middle. I had, in the workshop a piece of heavy walled boiler tube that fitted neatly inside the original tube, cut that to length then drove it through the existing tube and, hey, bit of flat black paint and a couple of spray paint can caps on the ends, it's strong, looks good and is functional once again.
    As for Queensland machinery inspection, unless the inspector is a "Landyphobe" he won't probably realise that device is supposed to be on there, but if you do remove the bar be sure to replace the bolt that helps secure the steering box to the RH chassis rail.
