Thread: S1 disco

hi all just joined the forum and thort i wud introduce meself i have a 93 disco which i just got,I have one query when looking under the front bumper the first thing seen is a tube which goes across the chassis it hangs down on two v shaped brackets i think its there to protect the steering rods from rock damage is this the case? and is this thing necessary for a rwc as its corroded at one end where it was welded to the bracket at the moment this is the only majorish thing i can see wrong underneath,there is no other rust of any significence.

When we bought our '98 D1 that "protection bar' was rusted through in spots and also slightly bent, right in the middle. I had, in the workshop a piece of heavy walled boiler tube that fitted neatly inside the original tube, cut that to length then drove it through the existing tube and, hey, bit of flat black paint and a couple of spray paint can caps on the ends, it's strong, looks good and is functional once again.
As for Queensland machinery inspection, unless the inspector is a "Landyphobe" he won't probably realise that device is supposed to be on there, but if you do remove the bar be sure to replace the bolt that helps secure the steering box to the RH chassis rail.
