300tdi water pump advice

Metal for sure.

If you are ordering parts, consider replacing the three bolts that go through the pump, pump housing and P gasket, they can stretch and if exposed to a lot of water can be corroded. They don't cost much and you can get correct torque around the gasket. Simon

Paper gasket for the water pump, but the P gasket goes between the block and aluminium housing the water pump sits in.
That will be metal, I don't think suppliers stock a paper one anymore ?

Anyway, good practice to replace that, as well as the three long bolts (if they haven't been already) with cad plated bolts.

As a rule change the 'P' gasket with a metal one, but if the mating surface isn't perfect the metal gasket may not seal and then the paper gasket along with a quality sealant would be the next best thing to do.

Inspect those three long bolts and if there is any sign of corrosion at all, replace them, I use a MolyKote preparation to coat the bolts,

That works well to stop any corrosion and the chance of seizing of those bolts.

Thanks Arthur, my suppliers only stock the metal P gaskets with which I've had untold grief so far.

I plan on using Hylomar blue on both sides of the metal p gasket.

I did that and it still leaked :(

I work on high pressure gas systems (up to 41 bar) and don't get leaks, yet I can't keep coolant @ under 1 bar in a tdi :confused:

I used copious amounts of that horrible smelly black GUD gasket cement, the soft setting one, worked for me :).

How about some 'Stag' cement, horrible pink smelly..........................

Seems to me that the smellier it is the better it works :D

If the OP is going to this much effort, water pump (is the original leaking ?), 3 bolts and P gasket, then it's probably a good idea to go the whole hog and replace the thermostat and get the radiator rodded/tested as well. Not much more effort and the jobs done properly then. :D

Yep, use that last time (plus Stag on the Welch plug)

Still leaked :(

Mine went in Perth.I was told there was not one available in Australia at the time.So mine was reconditioned .The price I was charged was $700 of which I could do nothing about.Never again will I be in that rip-off state.
