    300tdi water pump advice

    greetings people,

looks like the water pump on my 300tdi is on the way out and I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions or warnings about which to get or steer clear of, is the OEM part a good one or is aftermarket a better idea?

thanks in advance for any information

motor is actually a 2.8 tgv so I asume its a standard 300 tdi, if anyone knows different would be very grateful to hear from you.

Mine went a couple of weeks ago, and the consensus was "don't get the one in the blue box" - what ever brand that is!! Maybe BritParts?

Luckily mine was in a red box, made in Italy I think. Cost me $90 and I needed it the day before New Year, so I just took what my Mechanic had on his shelf (they are LR mechanics).

Changing it is a bit of a pain if the belt is off. I had to make up some special clamps to hold the belt pulleys to get the bolts off (there's 2 of them).

    Cheers
    David

Airtex is the OEM one. Just went through all this myself and opted for the Airtex over a generic which I was too advised to steer clear of.

    300tdi water pump advice

    Mine was replaced at 400,000
Not because of bearing or seal failure but because the impeller blades had worn almost completely away. Looked like blender blades and was only providing minimal flow. Getting hot occasionally and then head gasket leak at the back of the head near the fire wall. On inspection the Head had some hairline cracks starting to appear so was replaced at the same time.

Mechanic fitted and aftermarket water pump and it lasted about 6 weeks. On the way to Queensland water pump starts making a racket. Seal hadn't let go but the rollers were falling out the front. Miracle It didn't let go and cook the motor.

NRMA flat bedded it from Woodburn to Ricks who fitted a new Genuine pump. Great service from those guys!!

Moral of the story for me was always use genuine water pumps. The extra is way less than an engine rebuild

When replacing mine, I noticed that the OEM one has the triangle pulley mount and the cheap chinese one are round!

    thanks Arthur,

from what I can see it's best to put a metal gasket on rather than the supplied paper one, is that correct?
