P gasket. What a pain. 2 gaskets ago I discovered there was a shallow channel eroded on the sealing edge, not much but enough to prevent a seal. Took the mount to a machine shop and got it decked, only 2 thou needed to make it level. New gasket with Hylomar, leaked. Then the water pump started leaking too ( pinhole through the body near one of the top bolt holes). Replaced the pump, sealed with a new paper gasket and permatex non- hardening gasket sealant. The P gasket, figured needed a strong solution. Just replaced the water pump (oem) and P gasket on my 300tdi. The water pump was less than 30K old but the clowns didn't replace the paper P gasket and it was this that let go. Why oh why do people do half a job????????????
All good now.
Because they only have half a brain.
Sikaflex on the metal P gasket is still OK (yes I just touched wood) more than a year on.
Had to do an emergency waterpump replacement last weekend.
Repco had one on the shelf, REPCO brand. $79
I use another product the same as I use on my race motorbike when we remove the head gasket and replace it with this liquid gasket material. Expensive, yes, good you bet.Quote:

Had to replace a head on my racebike a few years back too - cracked head on Saturday practice, had till the next morning to put the old one back on (including swapping out all the valves, cams, shims, everything) but no new head gasket - sprayed the old one with copper gasket stuff. No choice, needed to make points in the race to maintain position so it had to go no matter what. Gasket never failed, even finished the season on it. The things you do.
But, that being said Slowboat, what do you use as a gasket fix? The Sikaflex I mentioned I would trust in a low psi liquid situation but probably not compression.
Who'd of thought there were so many racers (ex racers) lurking around.
Might be we need to get our speed fix. Not getting it in our Disco's :cool:Quote:
